i've decided to start learning guitar, any suggestions on the best way to learn, which book, dvd's.

i started teaching myself about 2 years ago when my grandma gave me my grandpas early 70's gibson...the book i used was made by hal leonard with a complete edition of 3 books...it came with a couple cd's also...i also found it much easier by just looking up some tabs of my favorite songs or 911tabs.com...its much easier playing with knowing the finger positions than knowing the notes and finger positions.

heres one of me and my guitar

I started teaching myself a couple of years ago. For myself I found it easiest to first learn the finger placement for the most basic chords ie: G, C, D, Dm, E, Em, A, Am, and maybe a couple more you find easy. These can be found on line under learn to play guitar tutorials or guitar chord charts. Then google a few songs under easy guitar chord songs. You're going to be shocked how many popular songs are made up of only 4 to 6 different chords. Print off a copy of a song you want to learn and start putting the chords together. Some people think "Tab" is easier, I personally found chords easier. Check both out and see which works best for you. Oh yeah, your fingers are going to hurt! Have fun :beer;

il agree to this, at least until they get callassed over but its definatly worth it. i also agree with the chords. just learn the basic most used ones and you'll find it easier also

learn the basic ones as stated above then search youtube...lots of useful stuff up there, techniques, break down of songs....

if your looking for a nice accoustic I have an all black norman I'm willing to part with

play until your fingers bleed, take a short break to drink a beer and then play some more.

when I first started I couldn't get my pinky to work at all, this was frusterating.after a bit it worked out and now I can't stop using it.
bottom line, stick with it through the hard times and it gets to be easier and a he!! of a lot of fun.

I just bought a guitar too.Well it was a year ago still havnt took time to play with it.I wonder if this should be in warming hut lounge section??

does it really matter what section anything gets put in,

how long does it take for my fingers to stop hurting

Of course it matters thats why they are there. You can cant put a square block in a triangle hole.LOL.I think.

Yep, learn all your open cords first. Then learn Bar Cords! It's all about practice and strengthening your hands. After that it is up to an individuals propencity in learning for the guitar!!!

Depends how tough you are! Initially mine would tingle and sorta throb for a day after plunkin away....and I'm pretty much a *****. As mentioned you will develop calluses over about a month. I found a good soak in "Maiden Water" really helped.:face-icon-small-hap

You can use your Pinky? You must be good...... my pinky does not have a connection to my brain function. Its been trying to sing along but it can't find a guitar string worth crap! :face-icon-small-hap

Been playing for 25 years. I originally took lessons but it was more about technique and not about learning to play the guitar and gettin' laid. My hands never did hurt until I started playing acoustic.

The biggest thing is to play. If you hide it in the closet and never pick it up you won't learn to play. I don't call it practicing. As soon as you call it that, you don't want to do it anymore. The one thing that I did to keep playing was I bought a Korg Effects Processor and a really nice Peavey Studio Chorus 210 amp. With the effects processor, you can make different sounds. It has about 80 preset overdrives, delays, echos, chorus settings and distortions that make playing more fun.

If you can and I recommend that you do. Learn some theory, playing your favourite songs is pointless if you don't know whats going on or how it works IMO. Play your favourite styles of music but at the same time try some different styles even if your not into them. It'll help you become a more well rounded player rather than being only able to play a certain style. But keep it fun. If you find yourself getting frustrated, put the guitar down, take a break and try again later.

ya i've found a couple lessons on the interweb that i'm trying out, and trying out a couple simple songs/intro's. fingers are pretty numb but it almost kinda sounds like something other than just noise.
