Learning a Utah law the hard way.

Thought I would chime in on a lesson I learned last year for the small fee of $75 dollars.
If you child under the age of 16 is driving a sled by their self, they must have a youth Utah sledding certification. The class is given by the state of Utah. I was not aware of this law but I learned, thanks to a friendly Utah officer. The class is only $10, a total savings of $65.:D

Just trying to give a heads up for those like me that don't know.

Play safe

does anybody know when and where the classes are held for kids license? i need to take my boy. don't need a ticket to add to the hard times.

I've been riding since I was 12 and not once was I ever hassled for being too young.. we had talked to the rangers and everything and they never even asked about it. they must be getting more and more strict now.

It's an online course, what better way to protect us!

IMO, at the end of the day, it isn't about safety at all! Just like the ridiculous youth/hunting laws/restrictions. Kids that don't get to go with their parents legally, will do it illegally and more than likely get hurt! Again, this is a great example of the state needing to parent the parents. Thanks, but I can make my own decisions for my young family. It's more about revenue generation and justification of the salaries that support fish/game mgt/cops and law enforcement. Better yet, if they want to protect us, stop illegal immigration. I.e. 12 child molestations daily by the hands of illegal immigrants, 18 murders of us citizens at the hands of illegals! Get real! It isn't about safety at all it's taxes, revenue!

They hold classes all the time you can get the booklet you need for the test from utahs web site they do the test at the ohv park I know bountiful jeep posse does it. I have had mine since I was 15 the test is really easy if you get the book. Also another law do not transport your sled with out it being reg. even in an enclosed trailer they can confiscate you sled or any other ohv just for not having it reg. If you have ?'s about laws my wife is training to be UHP so just ask.

Here is the link for the Class http://www.stateparks.utah.gov/stateparks/ohv/education-forms.html

So I'm curious, what area were you riding in? Years ago we certified my then 13 and 9 year old daughters and then never needed them. My now 13 and 10 year olds have never been checked in the areas we ride.
We should do it (tickets would suck) but it is furstrating when is seems like a waste of time.

We have had $75 tickets (X3) for riding in Island Park ID without out-of-state registration. It was the first season after they passed the law.

We where on the Bear River side of the Uintas. Parked at the Whitney warming hut. They drove up on us checked out our registrations. My boy was not on the sled they just did the numbers 4 sleds 4 people this kid is riding solo "Let's check him Dano"! BAMM dad gets the ticket. I will give credit though they were never pushy or bossy. Very nice about the whole thing so I was in the wrong and now I know. Just hope this saves a few people a small donation to the state of Utah.
