Leadville area riding.....

Im looking for some input from locals or someone that knows some good off trail riding around Leadville...I know of most of the trails...anyone ride weston pass? halfmoon creek? Im guessing mosquito pass is too windblown/rocky?

Haggerman Pass can be pretty good but windloaded at times so be careful, unload at Turquoise Lake. The ride around the lake is mostly groomers. I rode Chalk Falls/Climax the other day and there were some good spots but also some rocks lurking even when it looks really good. Leadville can be hit or miss as the we have not had killer snow the last few years and some of the good riding areas can be fairly rocky. VP is fairly close as well and you can unload at camp hale and not have to deal with the circus at the main lot.

Other than turquoise, where are the other groomed places to ride in Leadville? I read about e. mining district but don't even know where to begin.

Leadville

If you head out of town to the east on 5th St., it turns into CR 1. There is a trailhead that will allow you to ride trails through a old mining district. Nice ride. Les

Thanks for the info about mining district.

A, the link you gave me is not very useful...I've used that website before but "Groomed east side mining district on Wednesday" doesn't tell me where the trailhead is. I've emailed CSA twice in the past couple of years asking to make their website more newbie friendly and allow user reports of all of the areas listed on their website. My requests fell on deaf ears and CSA won't get a penny of my money until they make their site more newbie friendly and useful. Shucks, CSA website doesn't even list Corona Pass, Jones Pass, and other areas closeby to Denver.

You can get a map from the Leadville Chamber of Commerce. There right on the Main Drag Harrison Ave. 10/12 riding areas on the map.

My Favorite ride is up Half Moon Creek Takes you to the Champion Mill (do a search on the Mill) Not a well traveled trail but it was marked well the last time we rode. Some great photos of the 7 story mine building from the 1890s still standing. The snow gets deep right about 11k

There is a map in the link at the bottom of the page. That is what I was directing you to. It's the area groomed by the Leadville club. It's only a map of the Turquise/Haggerman Pass area. They also do Chaulk Falls. Another great place is Champion Mine. Great high terrain but very Avy dangerous. I managed to knock down a good sized avy there myself.

My guess is CSA does not want to become a forum (public posting).
They work with the state for funding and everything is regulated.
They will not list areas they are not associated with, groom or over see, like the areas that you list. If you need more info about TH that they over see, contact the club president for that area or the groomer.

Your suggestions would go further with the state of Colorado.
I would too would like to know why there is not site that shows where the government issues permits allowing rentals company's to make money on public land that we can also snowmobile (like some of the locations you mention).

Finally I hope you are supporting CSA and not knowing.
Buying your sticker for any of your toys...some of that sticker cost goes back into that sport, TH, S&R, and grooming funding ect.

I think that you should look into joining a club for a host of reasons.

Happy sledding :)

Age old question about a list of legal sled areas. I've asked several times...
