Layering

I am a little old school with how a I layer. I just was wondering what others do to layer and not look like a gomer. My issue is that I wear asterisk knee braces on both knee's and also I am allergic to tight fitting nylon blends.

So currently I wear:

Cotton insulated base layer
Knee high Polaris socks
Asterisk Knee Braces
Shorts

I look like a retard when i stop to fill up but at least I am comfortable!!

Why would you be worried about looking like a gomer wearing tighty whities and shorts snomobiling??:D
What about bibs and a coat?
Do you wear that over the shorts? j/k

Layers: Bottom, long johns, maybe 2 pairs, wool huntin' bibs, shell
Top, T-shirt or 2, wool shirt, jacket (uninsulated), maybe add a down vst under the jacket if real cold out.
Feet, light moisture wicking socks, wool socks, Goretex huntin' boots.

I typically look like the only guy at deer camp in Feb. after a ride!

If you can find something you're not allergic to I'd skip the cotton layer, once it gets damp, you're damp and cold all day. What do they say, dance like no one's watching? Same could apply to sledding gear. :D

Under Armour cold gear base - better than silks I used to use
Fleece mid
Nylon shell and bibs

Socks - at least 50% wool

I try to stay away from cotton due to water issues. Wool is a great old school layer because it will insulate even when wet.

I haven't found they right boots or gloves yet, probably because I'm too cheap (the underarmour is usually Christmas presents).

Yeah i forgot to mention that i dowear an outer layer!! I wear a tek-vest under my jacket and bibs.

I would like some fancy boots like HMK's but mama isnt going for it. I wear KLIM gloves and have been impressed with them. A little bulky but warm and dry.

I wear synthetic long under wear, some kind of sythetic sock, knee braces and slednecks zip off cargo pants. If I'm worried about being cold (which I'm usually not) I wear a pair of synthetic sweat pants and a second pair of socks too. Upper half is long sleeve undershirt if its cold, maybe a sweat shirt, moto jersey, moto chest protector, and arctiva jacket.

If you can find something you aren't allergic too, you really need to get away from cotton to be comfortable.

As said before, a good quote to remember is "cotton kills" once wet, cotton will not keep you warm. It is very bad to use as a base layer, or insulation layer. stay away from it. As they say, plan for the worst, and you should be ok.

Upper body, poly base, fleece mid, nlyon outer

lower body, some lightweight base, flleece mid, nylon outers, with wool socks

I try and get the thinnest stuff possible becasue I hate feeling like a blimp on the sled.

Depends, but usually base layer is shorts or lightweight jogging pants. top layer is a good pair of pants either my yammy ones got them free last year, or another pair. If I put long underwear on, I get too hot.

Upper, a poly top of some kind, tekvest, and a jacket with removable sleeves.. makes a nice layering option in the spring.
