1-21 another 14 inches has fallen at the staging area since midnight last night with another 2-3' in the Latour area,, 6" of accumulation while I was out tonight in the parking lot.. Temps were in the low 20's so the snow is very very fluffy and DEEP!!! Tonight a-1 thru a-5 L-1 Thru L-3 45 miles groomed.. 16 road to Jacks Backbone, to Latour F/S via flattop and Huckelberry loop back out 16 road.. the main 16 road is finally getting back to near normal but their are a few rough areas remaining. The upper system is holding 5-7 feet and the Battle creek area the same.. 2' at the staging area and snowing heavily down to 2000 feet!! new snow overnight may reach 1-2' so the riding will be excellant , come and enjoy bring your shovels and have a great time , be cautious , watch for other riders !! Thanks Wes

Latest Snow/Grooming conditions @ Ashpan Lassen NF

Grooming report for 1-22/23/25/26 2010: 1-22 A-1 thru A-9 L-1 thru L-3, 54 miles groomed, 1-23 A-1 thru A-8 L-1 thru L-5, 60 miles . 1-25 A-1 thru A-7 L-1 thru L-3. 1-26 A-1 thru A-10 60 miles groomed..

1-22 16 road to Red mountain loop, Dogsled/Cutter road, 16 Road to Jacks backbone,Huckelberry Loop, Flattop, to Latour F/S 16 road to staging area.

1-23 16 road to Ashpan Butte loop, to Latour F/s via flattop, Huckelberry loop road to the Banded trees , to the top of the latour/battlecreek connector, back to Latour F/s, cowcreek Cutter road 16 road to Dogsled, Red Mountain loop to staging area.

1-25 16 road to Jacks Backbone, huckleberry to Flattop, to Latour F/S back via Lower Huckelberry loop to L-2 to 16 road and Staging area.

1-26 16 Road to Red Mountain loop, to Battle Creek , to the bottom of the latour/Battlecreek connector, out to GrayBack to 16 road, Ashpan Butte loop to Staging area.

The snow just keeps coming , since last Monday the lower Ashpan staging area has received 2-4’, Battle Creek and the upper Latour system has received 8-10’ of fresh fluff.
Most ditch lines are full, there is and will continue to be a lot of windfall due to snow load, removed 6 last night and had 4 come across the road after I went into latour!! Snow has gotten considerably wetter over the last 36 hours, areas where trees have been removed will be rougher than normal so reduce speed and be cautious in these areas until the temps drop into the low 20’s and the snow will work good again, letting us repair the rough spots to our standards!!!!! All trail and Medivac signage has been put out with the exception of L-4 and H-14 which are both on the Rim road , I am unable to access this area due to the extremely deep snow and uphill climbs, as the pack settles I will have these areas open hopefully by Sunday the 31st. Backcountry riding will be unbelievable thru the weekend , I have not seen this much snowfall in the Battlecreek/Latour systems in many years, be cautious when accessing the backcountry on the trails as windfall is occurring due to extreme snow loading!!! If temps drop the night of 1-27, I will resume grooming and getting things opened for the weekend, snow today was working poor to say the least so daytime grooming will stop this week. As always ride safe, watch for others , and most of all come enjoy the best snowpack in many many years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Wes

2-9-10 Ashpan report:

2-9-10 Am and Pm, 85 miles groomed today , George got in 45 miles A-1 thru A-12, 16 road to Red mountain loop to Battle creek , The latour/Battle creek connector is OPEN and clear of trees great job Geo!!!!!!!!! From the Connector down Grayback to 16 road , back up gray back to the upper road to A-3, back Red mtn loop to staging area.. 1-3” of fresh snow this am for George with temps in the 20’s so the trails groomed out excellent!!!!
2-9-10 pm , temps in the low 20’s and 6’ of fresh in the upper system, snow worked and groomed out very nice. 16 road to latour F/S via the lower Huckelberry loop to Flat top and then out The Rim road,, the rim road is open and groomed from L-2 to L-4, it took 2 hours to cut in a 2 mile road, 15-20’ deep holes and 50 degree sidehills, it may have a few rough spots as I was not able to get enough fill in 2 passes to level some of the deep holes out, drifting and blow outs around the trees was the worst I have encountered to date!!! I removed 6-8 windfall and was able to get to L-4 , I will get out to connect L-4 with L3 (middle cow creek road) tomorrow pm and possibly if time permits the Cow creek cutter road to the East of Latour F/S time permitting as both of these areas will be extreme!! 40 miles groomed tonight, awesome snow and great conditions. As always ride safe, be cautious on newely opened roads as hazards may reoccur and watch for others as it will be a busy late week and weekend!! Thanks Wes

2-10-10 49 miles groomed tonight with temps in the mid 20’s to 30 degrees, 16 road to huckleberry loop to Latour F/S down flat top and out the Rim road, opened the middle road from L-3 to L-4 areas may be rough as their were a dozen or so windfall on this road so be cautious, back out Huckelberry road past the F/S and down the Cow creek Cutter road to 16 and to the staging area. Light snow falling off and on tonight with possibly 1-3” by morning. The Rim road opened last night is in pretty good shape but will need a pass or two to get it up to my standards watch for low spots in heavy fill areas as these were still soft tonight due to the amount of fill needed to make them near level last night, the same applies to the middle road opened tonight, areas may be rougher than normal till I can make one or two more passes. I may try and open the rest of the Cow Creek Cutter road to above (NE) of the fire station tomorrow pm depending on the temps. The lower system is holding 2-5 feet with battle Creek and the Latour upper systems holding 8-12 feet... Thanks Bob Wagner for the company tonight. As always ride safe, ride Right and watch for hazards as they may occur without warning even on groomed routes and as always enjoy the ride!! Thanks Wes

2-22 Ashpan report

2-22-10 50 miles groomed tonight under perfect conditions, 2-6” of fresh snow and temps in the low 20’s. A-1 thru A-5, L-1 thru L-5 , 16 road to Jacksbackbone, out the Huckelberry road to Flattop <Rim road intersection (L-2) down the lower loop to the latour F/S out and down flattop. Out the rim road to L-4, out the middle road to L-3, to the banded trees (L-5) and back to the F/S, out the Cow Creek Cutter Road to 16 road to the staging area. The Rim road and middle road L-2 thru L-4 are in excellent shape as I was able to cut most of the roughness created by 10-15’ of fill out due to the very cold temps, there are still a few rough areas due to sinking fill so please be cautious when traveling these roads. 2-23 am George will be doing Battle creek/greyback and the lower roads, 2-23 pm I will be out to do the Cow Creek Cutter road extention to the New Peavine road then continueing to open the Gulch Road behind Latour F/S. Another storm is predicted to hit tomorrow afternoon and into Wednesday. Riding is excellent with Ashpan 100% open with 45-50 miles groomed and Latour is 95% open with 45 miles groomed and more being done this week. As always ride Right, watch for hazards and other riders as they may appear without warning and enjoy the ride. Thanks Wes

Back to the Latour F/S out the Cow creek cutter road to 16 to the staging area. With the extremely cold temps the snow is incredibly powdery, more so than I have seen in a few years!!
