Lake Creek Avalanche 1/23/10

the snow is very deep and very unstable. We slid a pretty good avalanche up Lake Creek. We werent in it but it was close to us. The slide slid on a steep part of the hill and wrapped around a little bit. I bet it was 750-1000ft wide. The part where it broke on top was like 12ft at least. Everyone be careful!!!

I know Im going to take some heat for this, but what the h. As for the conditions right now if you are willing to ride the big hills or any for that matter as illustrated by these pictures , you are playing with FIRE. I went out today and didn't come close to any hills and had one of the best rides ever.
STAY AWAY from the danger its not worth it. There will be plenty of HERO days to come.

I don't know why you would take any heat for your opinion since it pretty much parallels most of the peeps on here. My impression from Derek's post was that they saw this happen. I didn't assume that they were riding it. If they were riding it, more than likely one or more would be buried.

Derek, if you were riding that type of terrain, then I'm gonna kick your arse the next time I see you! And you are riding with AVY gear right?

I'll help, you knock him down I'll run him over a few times

we were back in the trees and i went like 50 ft up that hill to turn around and when i was going back down i got into the trees and looked back to see it sliding. we were not hill climbing. i was just workin my way out of the trees. Yes i was wearing my beacon.

Hey, when the danger is as high as it is just stay the (fill in the blank) away. You got lucky! The snow is so sensitive you can trigger slides remotely or from below like you did! You are playing with fire to even get near the run out right now. Take this as a lesson learned! Glad you didn't have to learn the hard way.

Edit: You don't have to be hill climbing to die in an avalanche!

ya we werent even plainning on playin on any hills but when we came out of the trees that is where we were. Im glad eveything turned out safe and we didnt have to dig anyone out. We did not play on any hills today. But just everyone know this happened to it wont bury anyone this season.

Anyone playing on that ridge that runs west behind Tower right now is looking for trouble. Please be smart. There are 3 spots that come down in conditions way more stable than this. Not meant for the poster just anyone riding in that area.

Derek, you should get a hold of Craig Gordan from the UAC and give him the info on the slide and I am sure he would love to get a hold of the pics as well.

It is always good to report avalanches. It helps the forecasters with their job.

HEY "D" , ... I triggered a small slide near the abandoned cabin, that's a bit east of tower a few weeks ago, kinda looks like you were near the same area ?

peace-
