Hi Guys,

First snow bike, hope I'm doing the right thing! Looks like I'm going with a 2016 KX 450 with a TS LT. Im 100KG, plenty of dirt bike/sled time.

Interested in peoples thoughts, experiences with the Kawasaki KX 450, pros and cons

Cheers

KX450 is a great bike with a great motor. I'm actually trying to find a slightly used one right now as my second bike for summer months.

The only thing on the drawing board for the 15-16 KX is the new hybrid fork setup they have for the 15-16. I don't know anyone who has used one in deep winter yet (obviously due to it being brand spankin new) so it's hard to make an assessment. The older Kayaba PSF forks on previous air fork years can work with snowbiking but you cannot forget about checking them every ride. You have to keep your air pressure up near the 55psi mark (over Kawi recommendation of course) and make sure that when the forks get cold mid-day the pressure doesn't drop off too far.

The new Showa SFF-AIR TAC forks have not been that well received from the reading I've done. The guys on Thumpertalk all seem to have complaints about them and I've heard some grumblings from pro riders in certain articles too. I personally think air shocks are a joke (especially for snowbiking) and if I had a KX I'd probably find a set of springers that fit. 06 and up will fit to a 14 and probably a 15. Here is a cut from one industry article:
"Q: ARE THE SHOWA SFF-AIR TAC FORKS AS GOOD AS THEY SAY?

A: No, they aren’t. These are the most complicated and difficult-to-tune forks ever made. Between their three different air pressures, 20 different compression and rebound settings and four different oil-height adjustments, a rider has 420,000 tuning combinations to work with. And once setup, they are good, but not great forks. If you want great forks, they come with springs and are found on the 2015 Yamaha YZ450F."

It's a shame Kawi has chosen to go the air fork route because the rest of the bike is excellent. Easily the best jap dirt bike out there for summer.

I couldn't comment about them on dirt (sounds like Rush has that covered) but we've run a 2015 KX450 with the SFF forks all winter. They've been great- no problems, no concerns. I've actually been jealous of them a few times because I've re-sprung my KTM forks so many times this winter chasing the perfect setup.

With the SFF forks, we'd add some pressure, take a guess at the clickers and rip. Your snow setup is definitely not as crucial as your summer fork setup.
They worked great for us.

The KX450 starts good, runs good, and pulls hard. It has a great motor and chassis. It also responds really well to the turbo. Great overall bike.

Hope that helps.
