Ktm XC 250 build w/questions

It Begins! Time to build my first snow bike

2016 Ktm 250 XC
Used 2015 timbersled short track Enroute

Probably gonna do the 300 conversion. Anything think I should leave my 250 cdi box in there? Or go with the 300 one? (250 sx box not in the budget yet)

Thread on vitalmx said that a 38mm carb is a good upgrade on these things. Well I own a 2013 150 sx witch comes with a PWK38. Apparently this is a common upgrade for 250/300 guys to use the 150 carb.

That or I’m sticking with the stock PWK36. Need to know because I’m gonna order a Avid Carb Heater for the right size. (Lectron ain’t in the budget either)

.58 springs ordered, hand warmers, pipe wrap.

Also deciding if I should buy a TSS/Intake to compliment this kit.

Another question;

The bike came with the complete stock exhaust

And came with an FMF Gnarly fitted with a shorty can

Witch headpipe is preferred?

I liked the procircuit pipe the best... 38 will give you more top.... Your loose a little low....sx CDI makes it much more snappy...

Save the gnarly for dirt only. Use pc or fatty for snow. If budget is a problem skip the 300 kit and have someone cut the head. You will have more peak than a stock 300

I say run the 38mm. The carb heater is the same though. Stock pipe with shorty maybe the best combo. Cut head for 50% 110 Leaded. True that 250 has same or better peak than stock xcw300, but way down on grunt. IMHO skip the TSS, if anything check if the yeti or mototrax soft strut will fit. K.I.S.S. For intake talk to PST. Prey for Snow!

Thanks for the responses this far! Idk how I feel about holding the 250 wot all the time. I feel the top end will not last very long, as it’s also got 60hours in it right now.

Good to know the carbs are the same for the Avid heater, I’ll measure my 250 intake and get that ordered. I’ll probablt run the oem Ktm headpipe wrapped up.

Why the soft strut over the TSS?

TSS is expensive and several say it leaves alot to be desired as far as performance. Soft strut is simple and has less stroke or travel than TSS. You can also send the stock carb to someone like RB designs, and get it taperbored to 36/39 with a divider plate. Your topend wont last very long with 300 cylinder either. I feel like 50 hours is the mark when snowbiking. Basically one topend a year for my 300SX snowbike.

Avid carb heater ordered!

The XC came with a Scott’s dampener, Any benifit to leaving that on? Or delete it

You should ride the bike with and then without the dampner and let us know. The general consensus on here has been that dampners are more for summer but i haven’t seen the topic come up in awhile. Mine benefited my wallet when i sold it for 375. Kinda wish I would’ve tried it on snow first just to know.
60 hrs is a bit high to start the season off. You could do a compression test to see where you’re at and then have a baseline. Pistons are cheap (relatively).

I like it if you have to ride out on rutted out roads... But my neighborhood still has cars on the roads you ride out to a certain part

Agreed... 50 hours because you are beating on it like a red headed stepchild.... Walking in snow sucks... And there are a lot of places you don't want your bike to be blown up...cheap insurance

I have a bud that had a 250xc and went with the 300 kit and has 200+ hours with it as a snobike and riding dirt. Purely on dirt my 250xc has close to 300h right now. They last longer than you think.
