KTM freeride snowbike?

Now I know at first glance this seems like a silly idea to anyone who has riden or owns a freeride since they have almost no top end. I bought a freeride this summer had have loved the smaller chsssis light weight bike. Given that it's close to 40lbs lighter than most 4-strokes we use for snow bikes it could be good. Been researching and have found many guys who do the 250-300 swap on their freeride. Adds very little weight and more than doubles the hp if you use the 300 sx, pipe, ECU and head. May have to address the front shock as well since it's basically the sx 85 forks. Small, light and 60hp sounds really good to me.

I would wait for the new fuel injected 300 and use that. The smaller two strokes, even if nodded, can't do what a 450 or 500 four stroke can do. I am putting a Thumper Racing 520 kit on my 15 KTM SXF 450 this summer. I have a Yeti 129 kit.

If you are thinking about a TR 520 do the work yourself, those clowns used the wrong seals in my motor when I sent it to them, twice now I have a box of KTM parts and no bike. I wouldn't let them work on my lawnmower.

I would potentially be interested in trading a 6 speed 250 xc engine for the stock freeride engine. I just rode a beta xtrainer and im thinking I can make my xc do the same for a lot less $$$$.

There is no KTM FI 300 in the US for 2018, so not even an option. You haven't been around any good running 300's 2-strokes if you don't think they can do what a 450 or 500 4-banger can on the snow.

Anyway I started this as a thought on the freeride as a snowbike. The small chassis and different rank on the forks and light weight could make a superb snowbike. With a well set up 300 SX top end it could really be amazing. Front forks will be the limiting factor.

CMX built a free ride with a 120 last winter. Mark told me after they got it jetted it was a really good ride for light weight and short statured individuals. I asked him about a 150r honda and he was keen to the build if someone wanted to do it.

I ran an xtrainer last year for my wife .. for sure I would go with with a full size 2 stroke... I would be scared of that type of KTM estart only.... I have ran cr500s 250f 300 2 strokes and 450s with and without turbos... For Utah fluffy powder 4 bangers have worked the best.... 2 strokes the air intake is Uber important... That being said I will run a 4 stroke turbo and the KTM fi 250 2 stroke this season and see how it goes ... 2 strokes are a blast but man you want power

Beta was my least favorite but worked well for my 10 year old till the crank went...

If you do a 300 top end on the freeride you have to use the side case off the 300 to operate the exhaust valve. In doing so it's pretty easy to add a kick start if you want. Most of my ktm snowbikes haven't had a kick start, my 850 doo last season was e-start and had no pull start. Kinda weird to not have the back up to the e-start on a vehicle. Freeride snowbike would mostly be for my smaller 13yo boy and 17yo daughter. They motorcycle pretty well, but struggle a bit with their rmk pros.

Correct me if I am wrong but that is the old style starting system for the freeride 2 strokes... I know for me on my 300 with high comp in cold weather it would not turn the engine... Once warmed up you were good... But you need kick to warm it[emoji23]
