KTM Airbox + TSS Fitment

How does the TSS fit with a KTM airbox? Does it need to be cut into pieces? Completely removed? Trimmed? Just barely fits?


Specifically wondering about the fitment on a 13 500 XC-W and the 2015/16 KTM 450
 
On my 15 TE (basically an XC) the box will be coming out completely. I'm right against the frame as it is, so any motion will be an issue. I've seen some with box removed and a pod filter on... seems like the simplest way to go to me.
 
On the KTM's we have just removed the rubber boot and cut the bottom of the airbox/number plates off. We then just put the pod filter in and it is partially inside the airbox housing and part out, with the bottom of the box gone no snow builds up and then you still have the full structure to support the batter and the number plates are still all there so it looks like a fairly stock bike unless you get up underneath it.
 
On the TS website the TSS kit is listed with a intake pod (it's also in the picture of the fit kit). Not sure how it will fit, but at least that's one thing we won't have to buy. Wheel, any pics of how you cut away the box?

Doesn't your Husky have a plastic subframe/airbox assembly? If so, it is nothing like the KTM.....

I am curious how much of the subframe will need to be modified on the Husabergs/Huskies to mount the TSS. Wonder if Blaser can get us some detailed pics of the TSS on the FE501 they have???
 
Here are two shots of the 2015 KTM XC450F with an '15 SX kit on it. You wouldn't need to trim as wildly on a standard kit with TSS.

My throughts are if you have to cut it at all I dont see any sense in not just hacking it completely up and running the pod filter this way. This has been in some really deep snow and absolutely no issues with snow/ice buildup.

slight derail... I had thought that the TSS was mounted from the tunnel straight to where the upper dirt shock went.

but looking @ that picture, that doesn't seem to be the case at all, is that correct?

So there is still a solid rod from the upper shock mount down to the tunnel?

edit: I see where you say it's a 15 SX now... sorry for confusion - I'd delete this reply but can't see how :(

I'm mostly interested as I'll be hacking up my 70 degree husaberg's subframe next season to accomodate this :)

you are correct.

I was just trying to show a very functional way of modding it to provide ample clearance for the snowbike frame as it moves as well as using the pod filter for intake.

I have a 14 XC sitting right next to this one... just no snow kit on it, the S.F. is different yes... but the airbox is essentially identical aside from how it attaches to the S.F. Same issue, same fix.

I want to be able to run my bike in summer, so I'd rather simply remove it altogether... am I missing something there as to that not working the way I think? (on either bike... I'll be doing the XC as well this fall, and another older EXC)

It's worth hacking up one airbox/#plate and buying a new airbox/#plate assembly to most people (like what Nick has done above). I think the airbox/#plate piece is only about $40.

On the Husky's it might be different, I don't know.

Unfortunately on our 70 Degree Husaberg bikes the subframe is about $500 so im not super keen on hacking it up, although i may do that.

My other option i have been looking at is just making a frame out of aluminum that has all the bolt holes/alignment points for the rear fender and exhaust, this would be harder but would also shave off allot of weight.

final option if its just a little bit of clearance(don't think it is) is to heat and melt the subframe to accommodate the TSS.

time will tell, just need my kit to get here!!

Darren is right on the money here. Just spend the $40ish for a 2nd airbox (seriously cheap, the KX airbox with no sideplates was $115!) and pull it off with each season swap. Hack the winter and stocker the summer and you don't end up with a Frankenbike.

I just picked up a 15 Husky FC450 this weekend and the airbox is different. I need to get a price check done and see how much the summer/winter combo will run. The sideplates on the Husky are not part of the box on the shift side for sure, but they may be on the brake side. I need to start dismantling to see the whole picture.

For the 15 Husky FC450 I don't see any difference in how the TSS will mount. Yes the subframe might be made of that poly-whatever plastic, but the clearances for the shock are the same as the KTM. Airbox hacking appears to be the only extra task for the TSS on both the KTM/Husky 450 SX/XC/FC line.
 
Here is a picture of a 15 KTM 300 XC-W with just a strut rod on for now. TSS to come
I would say it will probably be moving 2-3 inches in this area. Im gonna do the pod filter
