I was looking through the threads on which battery to upgrade a customers battery to and find the ytz7s as the battery that is larger in size for the ktm. when i look in my book i dont see any difference in the stock battery which is a ytx5l-bs. they are same exact dimensions and CCA.. what are you ktm guys going with for sure?? 2013 ktm 500exc

I went with the YTZ7S... it's the same battery Allen has outfitted all his demo bikes with and many other people here have also moved to this battery. Over the stock battery in my 450 SX the 7 has MUCH more CCA and does much better in cold weather. I left my bike outside in -15 degree weather last month with the stock battery... didn't even get a single start out of it before the battery died. Went inside, swapped over to the 7, left it outside again in -20. Next morning she fired right up. I got 10 fires throughout the day before the battery started to show signs of dying (fire up, run 5 seconds, kill it... no charging the battery).

With all the mixed press on the Lithium batteries I'll take a nice dependable lead acid any day.

The 7s is an upgrade and is the exact same size. I believe stock battery is around 80 cca and 7s might be 130. Can't remember exact numbers but that is the battery you should get.

I switched to the shorai Li battery 2 years ago and it seems to work well for me but then again i ride 'balmy' Whistler. I've used it to -10C. Anything below that and i think my 10W-50 oil is too thick to turn over fast enough for a start. I've always heated my bike on those super cold days with a space heater or diesel exhaust to get it to light up. Once the bike is running though, i've never had any issues with the Li battery being too cold to light the bike up again - even when the air was -20C. Based on others Li woes, maybe i've been lucky...

I also follow the recommendations of Shorai of 'warming' up the battery by tuning my key on so the light turns on and draws current from the battery - warming it up. If i was to do it all over, i would stick with the lead/acid that Rush suggests and not have to futz with a prolonged Li start up procedure in the cold.

One thing i've started doing is plunging my bike in to my truck. I also have the Shorai battery. and I added leads for putting on a tender to allow me to plug my bike in if the battery is low or hasn't been run in a long time. I then added another lead on to my truck. When i load it up I plug it into the truck. the 30-40 min ride is enough to keep the battery toasty warm and shes been firing right up!

One word......EarthX I am completely sold on these batteries. The charging system on my bike went out. thought it was the battery crapping out. Replaced my old gel cell with an EarthX. It ran for three full days of riding over a two week period before the earthX died and I realized it was something more involved. My bike must have started 50 times just on the battery, not to mention running the head light, fuel injection , etc. Then it went from a ok to completely dead. Best batteries out there hands down in my opinion. and they are a local CO company!!
