what are the pros and cons of a turbo kit?Was told to rebuild motor every 40-50hrs ... Is there any truth to that?T.I.A.:help:

Thats a pretty standard recommendation on any race bike in service manuals, obviously many of us push far beyond that, but boosted snowbiking I would say sticking to recommended stock service intervals would not be a bad idea!

What kit are you looking at doing? Where do you live/ride, and what bike is it going on?

boondocker,KTM XCF 450 canadian rockies, elevation is 4600 8000 feet. So service manual recommends to do your bottom end every 50 hours?

Ride a turbo first before you build one, I rode a few of them -- Yamaha Yz 450 and a KTM 500 exc both build by very reputable shops.

They are not as much fun as people expect each shift you fall below the Turbo and there is way less bottom end --and the next thing you hit the rev limiter in a split second. Unless it is a straight pull stock MX bikes will be able to outdo you.

The turbos snow bikes are hard on engines and Turbos and not as much fun as a well set up MX bike with a few hop up parts . Now if someone would come out with a supercharger:face-icon-small-con

if youve never read through and MX bike service manual even a little bit and your planning on building a boosted snowbike, your gonna have a bad time! haha, not to sound super negative, but all the guys around here who built them are back on stock 450's with bolt on's. Mind you they are all Boondocker kits, I can't speak for KMS or Aero, but they had the same reaction as Powdermuncher described, no bottom end then your on the rev limiter. Fun in the open but sucked in the trees, so then why even have a snowbike. I have ridden some hopped up 450's with nitrous and that is a freakin blast! if your wanting more then NA can provide.

If you enjoy tree riding a stock 450 will outrun a turbo in MOST situations.... if you enjoy pounding hills all day and eating hot dogs with your sled friends go ahead and get a turbo. The turbo can certainly be fun it's just what type of fun are you after?

LOL, good one rush.

But on a serious note, if you want something to just go rip straight lines up hills, go get a boosted sled. less money and they work better. If you want a snowbike that just rips, get a 14+ YZ450f or a brand new 16 ktm. then slap some N20 on that sucker!

I ran Ice Age's setup this season. Loved it. It's going on my new 15 FC450. You'd have to push a lot of button to burn through a 10lb bottle... 2.5lb worked great for me at +20.

you only have a 2.5# bottle ;)

and yeah, a 20hp shot is a nice little bump on the snowbikes!

This thread really interests me....

I really want to go turbo, never rode one before. All I hear is stock 450s are dogs...I snow checked a SX137 w/ TSS...narrower track will produce more RPMs than standard, so that will help.

I ride in Colorado...high elevation. I'll be in the tree's, running hills, deep pow...a little bit of everything.

Do you think i'll be better off doing a full exhaust system, high comp piston, power commander and some cam upgrades???

Thanks!!

I tuned my KTM 500 turbo to absolute perfection last season...going from Boondockers setup with horrible lag and peakiness to a fluid, seamless boost transition that will outrun any stock sled in the powder on a climb.
I am willing to share the numbers if anyone wants...

I live just up the hill from you, near Jones... and I'd say RIDE IT. Don't waste your time & $$ making the thing unreliable before you get some time on it.

There are tons of guys on stock 450's (I'm on a 300) that wouldn't think of spending their $$ on parts, much less boost.

Amen, just go enjoy it. The reason I have a snowbike is because of the insane fun factor for very few dollars (per ride, not kit and bike, lol) and I don't worry about it. Change the oil every ride and just hold it to the bar and not feel bad. I have a turbo sled when I wanna go get wild and and haul ***, climb hills, etc.

I think turbo bikes will come a ways but as of right now, its like sled turbo kits were 10 years ago. Unless you are a fairly proficicent mechanic and tuner, I would hesistate to buy one. I know everyone claims bolt on and ride, but don't be bit by the sales pitch. If they worked that good barely used turbo kits wouldn't be popping up for half of new!

I had a Boondocker turboed YZ450F for the 2013-14 season and for last season I had a Boondocker KTM450 and love the power. The new turbo kits have no power loss in the bottom end and they have a very smooth power band. I still have both turbo kits. Not sure I could ride a stock bike again after riding with the turbo. 90% of the riding I do is tree riding and yes stock bikes can go where I go but not in the deep powder and up the steep hills.

How does the yz compare to the Ktm when turboed ?
