Ktm 450 sxf clutch is shot already!!

Well guys I just purchased this ktm 450 sxf brand new in the beginning of January.
So after seeing some metal in my oil I was getting concerned after the 6th change around 40hrs. I went to tell dealer. He was of no help, he said it was normal and not to worry at least I know my filter is working properly. Well I couldn't believe it and went ahead and dropped the oil after 8 hrs on that oil change. Still had metal in the oil So I pulled the clutch side off and found that the tangs on the friction plates to be half gone.

What would cause this? The dampeners seem to have very little play in them and the 500 I'm running has almost 1400 miles and 80 hours and everything in it is just fine.

As of now I am waiting for a reply back from ktm. They are investigating the pics I sent them and will get back to me. But also said since there is an aftermarket product on that they may not be able to do a thing.

Some of us on the 13 450 SXF had the same problem of excessive clutch wear, especially as the case temps began to increase. For us the solution was the heavier belleville clutch spring washer (280lb I think). The problem in your case is that I think KTM upgraded to the heavier washer in 2014 because of complaints... I might be wrong.

Whatever the case may be it sounds like you need a stiffer clutch spring.

I believe you are right Rush about the 280 spring being in my 15 already. What is weird is 5 out 8 plates wore on both sides of the tangs but the other three (innermost) ones look brand new. I plan on putting it all together with a new oem clutch pack and dampeners should I index the washer at the third (III) setting?Making it stiffer
It was on two (II)

The III setting is where I have mine. Never had a clutch problem with an LT in hot spring days with over 150hrs on the bike. I did have one day where I had some stinky oil but my bike temps were over 260 on a slow grind up a crappy trail. Had to kill the bike 3 times to let it cool on that section.

Not worn at all in my opinion I will check the difference tomorrow when the new ones arrive. My 500 is exactly the same play wise. And has the stockers in it still!!

Maybe the 15 is different but when mine wear the inner clutch shifts back and forth and once I replace them there is zero play. .. but I have a 13

There is a little movement in them now so maybe both bikes dampeners are wore out. I will compare them tomorrow thanks wwillf01. If that's the case I'm not a fan of this new dds clutch.

I can tell you this I am not a fan they have been high maintenance for me ... although when I switched to the full rekluse exp.... it did extend the life of the dampers for me...

If it was me i would replace the clutch disks with something like Barnet heavy duty clutch and the Barnet basket with the stainless edges. If they make it for that bike. Try again and see what happens. I just looked at my clutch on my CR500 with this setup and zero wear on the basket or the tangs. I have worn the clutch material to just over 1/2 i 2.5 years.

Well they are worn then that's about what they look like. Pretty upsetting really. It looks like the exp is the only option rekluse offers, that I can find. How's the maintenance on the exp? I have a z start pro in my yz and hate how I have to constantly check the tolerances in it. I wonder if anybody has manufactured a replacement clutch without the dampeners yet.

Thanks for the video.

I was thinking aftermarket but with not hearing back from ktm on their verdict yet, I wanted to stick with oem. Just in case it does it again,I will be keeping a very close eye on it now.

So DDS 2013 Clutch KTM Husaberg with worn hub rubber dampers: http://youtu.be/-Z_iwaO4gd8

For me I think the exp is way better with response and external adjustment... I have had the z start , exp, core 2.0 and 3.0 ... the key is to get it set for the application which requires a call to rekluse and they will normally set you up right...
If you go the rekluse route be careful what plates you use because some will expand and mess up the tolerance like barnett. .. so with rekluse either use theirs or oem... I would post it on KTM talk also.

I may go the rekluse route for next year. And I have posted all of this on ktm talk also. Thanks again!!!
hopefully ktm will get back to me tomorrow.

Just talked with rekluse they said on every design they have still use the dampened inner hub. :( (core exp 3.0,core manual)
So I'm going to just stick with oem for now and see how it holds up and I guess check it every other oil change.

While I was putting the bike back together the is evening. I noticed the tangs were actually wearing on the clutch cover also. This seems odd!!
