KTM 300SX or XC?

Wondering which bike to go with. Can buy a new 2015 KTM 250SX with the 300sx kit already in it, for about $1500 less than a 2016 KTM 300XC. Is it difficult to ad heated grips to the sx? would the XC be better suited for a snowbike? Which would you guys choose

It will be a 2moto going on it for now.

(I've had lots of 4 stroke mx bikes, don't want anymore :)

Thanks.

Either bike will be a blast. I went the route of the 2016 250SX with the 300SX cylinder kit and love it. The 250SX has tighter gears and is lighter. Easy to start so far so I don't miss the E-start. Heated gloves so don't need heated grips.

I would go sx for sure .. In my opinion if your an aggressive trail rider and dabble at the track the sx is a better fit.. I converted my 300 xcw to basically an sx over the years... I love it on the trails.. As far as the Snowbike I feel you need to get the most power possible... The sx is the ticket .. I am sure you could add a larger stator if you needed to power things.

I did the 15 300 XCW. and kinda wish i would have went with the 250 sx. The only benefit in my mind is the starter but mine wont start my bike anymore. Think its the high compression head IDK

sx will be lighter and shred higher farther faster
not going to complain about mine though. Great bike for summer and winter. Im Right with the new 450s in the snow

Agreed the starter is pointless and unless with high compression ... In the summer it works sometimes but once it gets cold good luck

Hmm, thanks for the insight guys. Was leaning towards the xc, but I think I'll go the sx route instead. Sounds like it's easy to ad a stator and carb heat if needed as well. Anyone know if the 300 kit requires race fuel?

I run premium pump gas with slavens AAA head and it is still together. Kinda want to try a low comp, high rpm setup from munn racing next with porting

I ride at 6-10k elevation

I'm curious as to why you've chosen to go with a 2moto kit? did you get a really good deal on it?

Yea, the 2moto was cheap and I'm lucky if I make it to the mountains once a year now. Most of the riding is in flat, hard packed Sk. Price on yeti's and Timbersled's is a little crazy.

In that case i wouldnt worry about doing heated grips anyways. just do the bar bags and be done with it. Much simpler and cheaper.
We ride a heck of a lot here in MT and I dont run the heated grips. Just big gloves for the trail ride in

Id go with the XC.
Bigger gas tank, 18 inch rear wheel. kick stand.
better Offroad bike for sure. The gear ratios on the xc and sx are the same (XC-w has the wider ratio).
Plus with the 16 xc you get the newer style plastics etc. For snow biking youll be glad to have the bigger tank as well.

Gear ratios are not the same. That is on the 4strokes. sx is a tight ratio 5 speed and xc is 6 speed moderate ratio. I agree that the xc is a far superior offoad bike, however my 300 snowbike is based off a sx tranny and crank. I think the tight ratio is better for snowbike personally. When the wheels are on the sx is a lot more explosive, if you will than the xc, however I realized real quick that I was faster on the xc than the sx in the woods.

I would start with a xc over a sx any day. There is no difference between a 300 sx kit and a stock 300 xc. In Stock form a 250 sx will outrun a 300, I started with a 250xc because I found a new one cheap and it was definitely faster than a stock 300. A modded 300 is a different story, I have pretty much everything possible done to my 300 now and it makes my girlfriends stockish 300 feel like a 125... but it takes some work. The transmission in the xc is awesome all around on snow or dirt. It is identical to the xcw with the exception of first gear. The sx transmission is very low and very close, too close IMO for the snow application, 2 strokes just don't turn enough rpm to benefit from a close ratio like a 4 stroke does. The xc has a lot of benefits like the tank, 18" wheel, kick stand and the electric start is huge especially with the ability to run lights and handwarmers, which I would not go without on snow. If I was building a flatland 2 stroke though I would bolt up a 250sx with a SXST, it would be a stupid fun combo!
