KOSO two stroke adapter for AFR sensor, necessary?

S
Just ordered a AEM af/r and wondering, do i need to order the two stroke adapter from Koso? Is this adapter to protect the sensor? Any experience of this?

I believe it is doing the same as this made by innovate.
Heatsink

I did use one of these on my 07 Suzuki LTR cause the Oxygen Sensor was so close to the head. I have never used one on a two stroke turbo mainly cause the sensor is usually mounted after the turbo. I don't worry about the sensor too much cause it does get that hot right there.

I have ran them on a two stroke from the start of the main bend of the pipe all the way back in the can. The readings were all the same. The data sheet for the bosch oxygen sensor says to mount sensor in the hottest part of the exhaust. They say it can take up to 10300C,1886 F.
DataSheet

So I probably wouldn't worry about the heat.

It is to protect it from deposits from uburned fuel and 2S oil. I have one laying on the shelf. Used it once, and never since. Sensor will be fine if you mount it where it get alot of heat. Heat seems to take away what ever stick to the sensor.

I emailed AEM and asked them about it. Here is the reply I got:

"I wasn’t able to find much information on this adapter, what is the purpose? Is it to protect the O2 sensor from being fouled due to the oil pre-mix? If this is true, that may not be a bad idea. O2 sensors are very sensitive to oil contamination. The concept for that part makes sense; we have something similar for our customers mounting oxygen sensors close to the cylinder head for individual cylinder tuning, but in our case the adapter is a heat-sink to help cool the sensor."

Yes it will help the longevity of the sensor. It pulls it out of the direct air stream. Heat, moisture kill its live span. Ideally you want it mounted between the 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock position.
