King Cat questions.

My friend and I just took apart his chaincase tonight on his 05 King Cat, and found a narrower gear on the bottom that the top. Looks like a 13 wide on bottom and a 15 on top?

Is this OK to run? Guessing for weight savings and less rotating mass?

Sled only has 1100 miles on it and he blew a chain last season. Wondering if this could have anything to do with it?

Also what do you think on tooth counts for that sled?
We are in AK riding 0-3500 ft. but found 19-43's in it which are for 3000-up. It lists 19-40's for 0-3000.

With the torque of the 900 would it be more fun with the 19-40's?

I know usually to ride the mountains you want to drop a few teeth on most sleds, but the M-1 is already a mountain sled so are the lower gears a benefit or not in this case?

I'm not a KK guy but from what I know and have read, that is the factory setup. Can't speak to the altitude vs gearing question as I always ride above 7k ft. A lot of guys have gone to hyvo gears and chains as they are stronger. Some recommend 20 x 45/46 gears as they feel part of the problem is the smaller upper gear stresses the chain and moving to the 20 tooth relieves some of that stress. I'm moving to a 20 x 45 hyvo in my '03 900, though haven't had any probs with the stock set up (yet).

From what I know,, the narrower bottom gear is done to help with any off set by the top gear(alignment). As far as ratios go it depends on what type of riding he does most (ie.) boondocking or moderate hill climbing. Your snow is lighter up there right? He might get away with the slightly higher gears(19-40), cause he can always go back to the 43. Now if he is doing alot of trail / boondock / hill climbing then the decision will be what do you do the most of, and gear accordingly. Would go with the hyvo chain and gears though, and like VDO1948 said would probably go to a 20 tooth top sprocket because of the binding issue.Definitely 15 wide chain and top gear and 13 bottom. Check to see if it already has the hyvo chain in it. Not sure of the difference my self (yet) but someone on here will be able to tell you how to determine that. Hope this helps.
