my buddy and i went riding up at crystal springs on sunday for a quick rip and snort ride so we did not top off the gas tanks (first and last time that will happen), we were getting just over the hill under the power lines and my buddy's sled was kinda of acting up but only on a hard pull up hill (go figure huh?) so we continued to goto our fun spot which is by Lizard Lake, finally i was switching gloves and notcied that i couldnt hear my buddy so i went and found him at the bottom of a hill, helmet off and hands in the air. went down to find no go with sled and really low on gas, decided then to head to the sno-park and beg for some gas. met a great guy and his son-in-law that were there with the guys from Pierres Polaris, gave me some gas and even followed me back to make sure we got out ok (more than i could have asked for) got to my buddy who was now about 100 yards up from where he was. when we got to where my buddy was there were two guys sitting at the bottom and were letting us know that their buddy was coming down and to wait, once he was down we went up got the gas into the sled and got it up and out!!! my buddy started to tell me that the guy who came down before we went up saw him with his helmet off, side panel open and hands in the air. the guy looked down at my buddy and said "holly honey snot" turned around and LEFT!!! what a guy huh!?!?!?! didnt ask if he was ok, do you need help, does your party know where your at? FING NOTHING!!! These stories that we are posting about the people that leave you in the backcountry alone (like xpensive) and the people that dont do anything when you do need help should all lose their snowmobiles and privileges as well.

I am the type of person that could never do the things i have read about its just bad karma and bad on you as a snowmobiler, we all might be out there in seperate groups, riding different sleds and doing different things BUT at the end of the day we all need to start looking out for one another and know that we are all a family in this snowmobiling community and we all look out for family. granted my buddy wasnt hurt or in serious need of help but its common sense and common courtesy. i am new to this sport this year and i could never act like some of these cowards that leave people that they are with without checking on them or waiting for them, or asking someone if their ok when its ovious that they may need help.

sorry for how long this is, but after the weekend i couldnt hold this in and wanted to share my .02 with you all. thank you to all the people that have helpped us especally over the weekend and thank you to the people that do ask if everything is ok when they come up on someone.

To all the people that decide to leave without their whole party and/or deciced not to look after one another PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sell, get rid of or burn your snowmobiles and DO NOT snowmobile anymore we dont need people like you out there with us cause if you dont stop and ask for us then why should we give a flying F**K about you? even though WE WILL continue to stop for you.

rant over and thanks to the guys for their help on Sunday!

you know we always stop and ask everyone if they are good or need something when we come up on them. we do it wheeling and out in the snow. to the point i have shredded a couple of belts towing sleds out, and burned up a clutch or 2 in my jeep hauling people out.

you know if i blew past someone and then found out someone died up where i was, i think i would literally go insane. plus i always have my family with me and i would hope someone would stop and check on one of us.

there is something about al these guys hauling out an 18 pack and marking the trail with their MT's?! lets ride, wheel and quad then have a drink at the end of the day and say things like holy crapinstien did you see that spot where i almost...? not be a statistic or that group that all the greenies point at and say them, they are why we want it shut done! drinking and anything except sitting around the campfire is wrong.

glad all worked out for you and you are ok.

i'll step off my soapbox now.

who was it?

I was towing a buddy out on sunday and I guy that was riding with us took off on his own. Just wondering what color and make of the sled the guy who wouldnt help was riding. What time of day?

he was on some old POS ski-doo summit red and yellow, white helmet without the visor and i think a blue jacket. one of his buddies was wearing a neon yellow construction jacket and the other was in a camo jacket with jeans on, you know the guys that are out for the sport:face-icon-small-con, honestly they looked like the type of people who dont care about anyone else besides themselves and dont really realize how bad things can get back there.

Sounds like newbeeies that just traded an 85 Bronco for a couple of sleds. Now if dude was decked out in Klim gear and a brand new sled and pulled that ish i'd go through the roof. Most likely had no clue what was going on. Hopefully they learn over time though! Regardless, inexcusable. In the wise words of Ron White..."You cant fix stupid".

Both parties are equally stupid. The guy should have checked that you were okay. However, you have no excuse for running out of gas unless its on the trail, on the way out which can happen on occasion.

Mechanical breakdown is another story but I am not going to ruin my day because you were to lazy and/or studip to fill up your tank on the way to the mountian.

you know i already stated that we wont be going out without filling our tanks right? i said it was the first and last time, sorry new to the sport this year didnt realize how much fuel we burnt up before, didnt realize that 10galllons goes by after a full day of riding.

so what happens if there is a fuel leak and leaks out fuel without you knowing it and then you run out of gas? am i still stupid idiot? what happens if the rear fuel pick-up in the sled isnt working there for no fuel to the motor there for sled doesnt run there for your broke down mechanically still a stupid idiot?:face-icon-small-win

Hope you never need some of that karma there talking about.

I always stop and check in with a rider who may...or may not be in distress.

I never expect the same from someone else, nor would i hold it against them for not stopping. I'm a big boy and am prepared to deal my my surroundings.

Now if I was waving violently and actively trying to flag someone down and they blew by....I might not feel the same.

I also would not have left someone alone I was riding with....even if it was to go get supplies for rescue.

so what are you supposed to do then? if my buddy says hey run and get gas, tools etc. and he is just going to stay there till i return, do i simply respond with "well i cant leave you and we are just going to have to wait till someone comes back where we are" or "we need to leave your sled and tandom out of here to get gas, tools etc. then tandom back"

im just trying to get some clearififcation on this as it seems like that isnt the best possible plan in some type of situations. i recall a post about how you NEVER leave someone behind UNLESS to go get help. so whats more important staying with your buddy and getting nothing accomplished OR make sure he is ok and has food and/or water and run back to get supplies?

like i said im new to this so if im wrong on any of this BESIDES me not topping of with fuel (which wont happen again after all of this) please let me know.

TUDIZZLE-what would you have done?

First mistake was not having enough gas....lesson learned.

and yes...you tandem out...tow out..do whatever to not leave a man alone in the backcountry. What if your sled had broke down on the way out....now your both alone.

But the bigger picture here is..

YOU decided to leave a friend to go get supplies. Now you are upset that someone did not stop to help him.

Why are they all of a sudden responsible for the situation that you put yourself into? Especially one that could have been avoided with a little common sense...gassing up your sled.

On a side note....I always get a chuckle out of the "karma" comments. Nobody ever thinks its their bad Karma catching up to them? lol

my take on this for what its worth is, if something happened to you, the guy now riding alone, and you become incapacitated and someone comes to your rescue and you are in no condition to communicate that you have a buddy waiting for your return, .... now what?

i know its easy to monday morning quarteback and all, but it all worked out, lessons learned and such, but i think the general thought here is, its super unpredictable out there be prepaired, as best you can, for all senarios.

luckly i usually ride in a group of 4 or more so helps with the options.

that is a very good point and there has been alot that we have learned in a short time out there.

there have been very good points made about this subject and the bottom line is every senario is different and handled differently but we all still need to look out for one another weather that be someone just stopped taking a breather and asking if their ok or waving violently for help. i just hope that everyone out there is looking out for one another because you never now when your card will be pulled out there.

I would agree on this point, probably towing the other sled out would have been the safest option. The point, it is better to stay together.

I was thinking i wanted my 5 minutes back too until I read tudizzle's posts. That was worth what I paid for my membership all by itself. I just learned a couple of things. Thanks. wake don't get pissed, if he was sitting across the table from you he would have said the same thing. Multiple lesson's learned. Just for info, I believe they could have walked out to the truck from where it sounds like he ran out of gas.
