KABOOM Driveshaft

I talked to a friend Saturday night that has a buddy that works for Polaris I guess. Don't know the guy but said supposedly Polaris is coming out with a recall on Wednesday. Anybody else know anything about it???

IMO this is not a matter of having a "good one" or a "bad one" i believe they will all eventually fail. Just a matter of the end working loose and then its over. pathetic engineering failure by polaris. It makes me mad that they are still hiding under a rock with this and have not recalled them. I would encourage anyone who has had a failure to file a report at consumer product safety commission. Link is here:

LOL Remember the 900 ?

Funny, the 900s never had driveshaft issues.

My 900 has 4300 miles on it and is a blast to ride, and the 900s don't need anything other than STOCK parts (some of which are '06 updated parts) to make them completely reliable! Anything beyond that is simply to lose weight, improve handling, or enhance the overall performance.

Now back to topic... pretty hard to believe Polaris hasn't addressed this yet.

no, I think we're gonna do hasler on the 14th. buddy has a new pro lite 900 coming up from mountain magic in idaho, should be here on the 10th. another friend has a cabin at the flats, we're gonna stay with him.

you don't still happen to have a 146 skid laying around by chance? lol....

Right on. I just have a seat left.

shafted

It happend while boondocking over the driveway 2 up in the dark with a case of coors. Good thing there was a good set of funbags infront of me for cushion. Has about a mile on it. I wouldent worry to much has a blower on it too and i forgot to turn the pressure down.

ah, polaris corporate finally chimes in.....

?? wtf, just said what it looks like. One side of it looks like it got busted open from a hit, doesnt look like it spun much before failing. also noticed lots of glue on the stub. Bad enough gotta worry about the belts (1 with stripped cogs this weekend i know of). you keep typing, I will keep riding.lol

I could not agree more that this needs to be fixed, but if they do any kind of redesign it will be 6 months before we see the part (design time, manufacuring time, distribution).

The thing that would make the most sense is for Polaris to call the supplier for the '12 shaft and tell them to make as many shafts as they possibly can as fast as they can. But what they will likely do is replace all broken shafts with more glued shafts, and state that the problem is with only a small percentage.

He was kidding!

This is what most look like after failure. With the power on and some momentum, shaft spins in the end of the aluminum extrusion and then the force of the track pulls it apart. You don't need to hit anything except the gas. I'm not convinced its a bad design, but a manufacturing defect.

I dont know much, but i think that if it is recalled (which it probably will be) you will not get the sled back on the snow till mid January!

saying that, i like the shaft collar idea but I think putting steel rivets on all six sides of the shaft connecting the shaft to the cap is a solid fix till they help you guys.

This will more than likely void the shaft waranty if it breaks, but if it is recalled it doesnt matter? imo
