I see that Johnson Pass is still open to ride but is it safe to do so? I am looking to ride somewhere close and I know it has a lot of snow there still but I don't want to risk being buried. I don't know too much about the area and wanted to know if this is strictly a hill climbing area or are there places to play around without taking that risk? I've got other options as well but I wanted to know about Johnson Pass before I considered going elsewhere. Thanks.

If you go in from the MoosePass end, or trail lake way its probably a little safer. the anchorage end seems to have more avalanches. Once you get up there to the lake you can play all over and even go to the other end by bench lake and up into the hills. We went this last weekend. Had a blast. Its obvious where you need to stay away from. but the snow was awesome and the hills were great. be careful of giant holes at the bottom of some of the hills by the lake. get familiar with where your riding before you get crazy around the lake area. There are some big deep open areas that if you fall in, your not getting out. You can see the tracks where people are going up and over.....just make your own judgement and be careful.

In my opinion, you can safely travel up into johson pass from the turny end. It is what you CHOOSE to climb while up there that can get you into trouble. Like was said already, Don't travel faster than you can stop once up in the open. Deep narrow creeks and holes can appear out of nowhere. Use your head, and you can be safe up there.

Appreciate the info, is the trail near Moose Pass/Trail Lake easy enough to take into Johnson Pass? Haven't been in there before and I may go with someone that has but I need to find out if he's up to it.

trail from moose pass is nice. Please keep it that way. LOL you just head down the lake north from the lodge. stay right down the middle of it. theres an open area in the lake down towards the other end that never freezes over. about 18ft deep. a guy lost his machine in there a couple of winters ago. anyhow, head down and to the very end and go under the tressle and up the river. stay to the left of the beach and you will see where the trail starts. you have to go over the railroad tracks and then your off...its 9 miles up the trail from MP end.

Yeah I worked with the guy that lost it down there, lol. He recovered it that spring and it runs on the same motor right now I believe, haha.
