Exactly what he said. One of the easiest phazer mods out there. I found that the 600 carbs are set up almost perfect for a phazer with a pipe. I ran a set with both PSI twin pipes, and Bender/Aaen single pipes along with gutted airbox, cold air kit, Bender ported cylinders, SX-cut pistons, and Boyeson reeds. Carbs worked great. My set-up was a little peaky, and I would have to re-jet if there were temp swings of 10-15 degrees. I found that the flatslides would use the same jetting as the stock phazer carbs set up for the same mods. You will have to jet up at least one size if you gut the airbox, and another if you install a cold-air kit. I could give you jetting suggestions, as I have set up both phazer carbs and 600 carbs for just about every conceivable engine combo, but I only ran from sea-level to 3500', so my experience won't help you much. Just start out slightly richer than the stock carbs, test it, and lean it out as needed. If the mid-range is a little doggy, drop the needles a clip. Best thing for setting up a phazer is running an EGT guage and learning how to use it. An almost mandatory addition if you are serious about phazer performance.
If you install the carbs, gut the airbox. You will notice a difference. Do you have a pipe? Get one! A PSI single or the Bender/Aaen "can" pipe, are two of the best out there. What ever you do, do NOT buy a DG pipe. You can find them cheap, but the bottom-end is non-existant with them. Running a pipe along with these carbs and a gutted airbox will REALLY wake your sled up.
I have a Bender cold air kit in the back of the shop from my old mod phazer if you are interested, and may still have a pipe laying around. If you need any phazer info, parts, or have questions, please feel free to PM me, I ran my hair-dryer for ten years before I finally went liquid. I can give you a handful of tricks to wake up your phazer! I also have set-up sheets for PSI and Bender pipes that have jetting and clutching recommendations for varying elevations and temps.
Another thing that I just remembered - the stock 600 v-max throttle cable has a 90 degree bend in it coming off of the carbs that makes it a pain to clear the phazer airbox. It can be done, but it is hard to route the cable so that you don't put it in a bind. I carefully took some of the bend out of the 90 to help with clearance. You'll figure it out. You will need the 600 throttle lever assy as well. As for the chokes, I blocked off the factory plunger chokes, and installed a primer. Much easier. I kept having trouble with the plungers hanging up, flooding the engine.
My rant is over. Even though I have been on 'Doos for years, I still have this passion for old Phazers, you know??
I miss ol' Red, it was a great sled......
