jetted down...got richer?

I have an A/F gauge and have been seeing 11.7 lately at elevation. Decided I would jet down a few sizes to target about 12.5 at WOT. Dropped from 480 to 450 and raised my needle with a shim. Got out today in good pow and she was better on the trail (about 14.5 instead of 15-17) but when I really got on her I lost rpm's and she ended up going heavy rich (like 10's) and ran like chit. I pulled the box and checked to make sure the needles were secure, check hoses and fittings. Everything was good.

After the sled sits for a minute, I could fire it up and take a pull and it would start out really strong but about 1/2 way through it would start running bad. Let it idle and try again, starts out as bad as it finished last climb. However, if I turned it off and back on, it would seemed to reset.

So, Only thing I can think is that the deto sensor is going off and changing the timing so it runs doesn't burn the fuel correctly and goes pig rich. I'm gonna change back to 480's and see what happens but thought I'd see if anyone else has any other ideas.

Any thoughts?

Here is a few pix of our ride today...not too bad

... you raised your needle... that's why the sled is running richer.

try shimming the needle instead of going a full clip... you would be surprised how much fuel change occurs when you move one clip.

... also, if you are running rich... why would you put 480s back in? those are pretty big jets IMO... I have an 840BB and I am running 420/430.
