J shaft update gear alignment

So I just replaced my jack shaft to the 15 style. Bought the update kit, it came with the hub and pto bearing installed and also came with the chain case side bearing, snap rings etc. so install was easy but the top gear now has a snap ring to hold on the gear instead of the bolt and spring washer. So does cat want this top gear to float on the shaft ? Does not seem right!
No spacer or shims to take up the gap behind the gear. The only way for the top gear to be parallel with the bottom is if the top gear is flush with the end of the J shaft.
It looks to me I need to tap the J shaft and find something to shim/space the top gear, it's all of a 1/4" maybe 3/8 away from the snap ring the holds the bearing. I did not measure as I was a bit pi$$ed and walked away

You should have two smaller snap rings that hold the top sprocket on the shaft, one behind and one on the outside of the sprocket. This is in addition to the larger snap ring/washer that goes on the outside of the bearing in the chain case. If the only way for the top sprocket to be in line with the bottom is to have the sprocket flush, you did something wrong. Either the bottom sprocket is flipped around, or you did not get the jack shaft all the way in. I just swapped jack shafts this summer and didn't have any issues with sprocket alignment. I've got about 300 miles on with the manual tensioner and zero issues.

Check out a service manual online, pretty helpful if you forgot which way the sprockets went on. Good luck
 
Put one shim between the first snap ring and the sprocket to space it out. Some applications have wider sprockets. One of the extra shims from your original shaft is the right one. Most need a 60 thou shim, some will take a 90
 
I will look it over tonight.
I know I can put the snap rings on and install as directed, but when I put the straight edge against the bottom gear it tells me the top gear needs to come outward.
Update : so tonight I looked everything over and it is installed correctly ! With one original shim behind the gear, with snap rings inplace the top gear is 75 thou away from being perfect.
So that's as good as it gets I guess. If the shaft was drilled and tapped it would have been easy to get parallel perfect.
