It should cost more $$$ to be this stupid!

If someone choses to ignore a mandatory evacuation and then they call for rescue they should have to pay for their own rescue. It should not be on the shoulders of the other tax payers (who got outta dodge or made proper provisions to sit it out) to pay for their ignorance.

Just my .02.

Ok rant over thanks for reading I feel better now.:o

I differ in one small point of perspective. I don't think the government should have the right to tell you, you have to evacuate. I think they should make strong recommendations to leave. Then if you don't heed their warning, that's fine, but don't call for help, cause the government isn't responsible for saving your stupid butt. It was your personal choice that got you in trouble. Well be around to help you after it's safe.

I agree whole heartedly.

But to play Devils advocate.......................................

Who should foot the bill when a group of snowmobilers become lost and need to be resqued?

Or carcasses recovered after an avy?

Dadgum Mafesto, that's easy. In Idaho $1 of every registration goes to a rescue fund. WE PAY OUR OWN WAY.

I see your point, but the last hurricane in that area, many more folks died in the evacuation than the hurricane, it would have taken a lot of convincing for me to go too.

So you're saying ALL SNOWMOBILERS pay a little to cover the cost of those few in need.

Hmmmm

Sounds alot like our tax dollars helping recue those in need.

Like I said, I agree with the point of this thread. I just enjoy the debate!:p

Weeeell if your riding in an area clearly marked off limits due to ave danger and it has been announced on every radio and tv nation wide, I'd have to say it needs to come out of your pocket!

I think Bigfoot has a better point that I had not really thought of.
I guess I can't be mad at them any more...thanks a lot man!

you may pay your own way but in the 14 years i have been involved with it i don't ever remember receiving any compensation for rescues as a result of a bad decision or and accident. I think in some cases you should have to pay for being less than intelligent

Sounds more like insurance to me.

The fund was created two years ago, I believe.

What kind of compensation are you looking for? I guess I don't understand. Most S&R are voluntary. Volunteers don't usually expect to get a salary.

The fund has been around for a long time all all i was saying is that every recued person by no means is paying there way as you indicated. It is voluntary and those rescues arnt cheap. I'm not looking for any compensation i get personal satisfaction from helping but if people were more prepared or used just a little common sense there wouldn't be a rescue in 50 percent or more of the cases.

Yha, most S&R are the result of being stupid. The bill was signed into law 07/01/05, I assume they started collecting for the 05/06 season.

Snowmobile S&R Fund

Snowmobile S&R Fund

That's one i wasn't aware of I was talking about the state reimbursement fund which a unit can send in gas costs lost wages vehicles time 4 wheeler time or any equipment time and receive reimbursement as long as there is still money in the fund. But if any reimbursement is got it stays with the unit to pay for bill acquired during the search but in most cases that cost has always been absorbed by its members . Any equipment that the s&r member needs or costs that individual acquired comes out of there own pocket except or the basics first aid kits radios and gps . I can remember a few searches that have cost me over a 150 dollars and in my unit we have 35 members with most call outs we get at least half of our members going that's a lot of change that doesnt ever get paid back that's all i was saying. But I'm not ranting or raving I enjoy it. :beer;
