thinking of heading to island park end of feburary. wondering where is a good place to stay bringing 6 guys we like to stay off trails as much as possible. been riding in togwotee area for ten years thinking of trying someplace new. any info would be appreciated.

If you like off trail then the westside of US 20 us where you want. The Eastern side has more trails and plenty of boondocking but does require some trail riding to get around.

On the west side you can go to Read peak drop into Hell Roaring climb over the bread loaf and on up to Mount Jefferson. Or you can go on out to Keg Springs and just pick you way across all the open areas to play in the pockets of trees and drainages.

You could even head on out farther and hit the Kilgore area but its a long flat ride past a lot of play areas (mountains and hills) to get there.

If you go east toward West Yellowstone on a weekend it is pretty busy. Stay on the west side and you can ride all day and maybe see 2 other groups

....and one of those groups will consist of a couple of 2-up sleds with big freaking coolers bungeed on the back who have gotten themselves into a ravine that only a skilled mountain rider would even attempt to conquer. If you are an arsehole like many who ride Island Park you can laugh and ride on by but if you are like the majority of the local folks you will spend the remainder of your day getting the overweight easterners out of the canyon.

thanks for the info. where is a good place to stay for the week. any good lodges in the area with good food and maybe a bar for a cocktail after a good days ride?

You can ride from your cabin without adding too much distance to good stuff And the bar is stumbling distance to your cabin.
