Island Park Snow Conditions

New to snowest, here from Maine thinkin about invading island park this winter with some buds. Been to grand lake colorado now time to try somewhere new. Talked to the pines and were planning on staying there. Will be renting sleds from shane? I think thats his name. Weve all been ridin forever, just not in the mountains yal got. Were either comin the last week in february, or the 2nd week in January as there the only times we can make it. Prolly be 3-5 of us. Never been in the area before really lookin forward to it. Places to go, avoid?

Ride the Big Springs loop, ride the Mesa Falls loop, ride to West Yellowstone and grab dinner, eat at Boondocks. There are plenty of open meadows in these areas to play around in the powder.

Having never ridden mountains before you will not want to start without some experience and proper gear. You might not ride again.

Thanks for the info, were not lookin to go tackling the steepest draws in the area. Just lookin for some fun climbs and bowls. Again, thanks for the info.

You should also try the Black Canyon area. Reas Peak and Arange Peak are also fun, but monitor the Avy reports and use the proper gear. Take and Avy Awareness class if any are available in your area. Enjoy!:beer;

Just got back from our trip to IP. Cut it 3 days short due to no snow with the exception of the forest service roads and daily temps around -11 It was nice to have the place to ourselves though. Maybe we'll make it back in January.

El Nino

Maybe the whole El Nino theory is holding true.

Hopefully it adds up before we make our annual trip at the end of January.

No matter what the conditions are, it's hard to have a bad time and it's a hell of a lot better than going to work.

Thanks for keeping everyone up to date!

Historically, anytime after Christmas is pretty good, but to find the really deep stuff it's usually Feb.-March.

Update this week anyone? I know we didnt have much at the our cabin beginning of the week but hopefully they have picked something up, especially today. Would like to know if there was any base up high before today though. Hoping to ride tomorrow... somebody let me know if they have any info. Thanks!

Went up today and can't believe how little snow there is. Extremely disappointed. Absolutely no base and only about 2' in the open riding areas. Be careful getting off the trails unless you know the areas very well.

Went to Island Park and West Yellowstone today.

At the Western End of Island Park (Last Chance) there was 6 inches or so in most places. All the weeds and sagebrush in the fields are still exposed

Then went to Big Spings.
Significantly better snow there. 12-18, and plenty of tracks to be seen back in the woods where peeps have been playing.

Continued on to West YellowStone and it was pretty dismal there as well. The place was a ghost town today and the snow looked like West Island Park.

This whole area is still waiting for one GOOD STORM to roll through for the lower elevations.

I am sure up high, there is MUCH better snow to be had.

Has anyone made it up to Jefferson yet? What is the snow like if you have ?

We rode Black Canyon today. It was decent. We still need a lot more snow. There is a crust on top (must have rained) and no base. We were out on the west side last night. There is even less snow out there.
