Island Park Snow Conditions

Targee creek is where I would go if I were you. and yea there are avy's, a lot this year. I rode jefferson today and I broke a small avy near the big back bowl on the Idaho side. The hill was tiny and I didn't think that it would slide but it did. Be safe

2/7 - 2/14/09 Report

Conditions are getting a lot better. Got a little snow each day last week esp Tues. More snow comming??? Prefect weather with new snow on top of good base in most areas made riding good. No breakdowns, no incidents - best trip in a while.

Best snow we found was East towards YNP above Black etc. Lots of untracked snow was found. Avy broke on Two Top which was unusual but the riders were doing all the wrong things. I passed up on many questionable hills - not worth it.

Access to Jefferson from Yale was tracked to chit. Hit it from the North side easily and was a lot nicer. Very little snow North of Centennials toward Elk Lake but awesome views. Green Canyon area was good too with zero people.

Looks like it will be crowded this week. 100's of rigs going up as we were leaving. Have fun - be safe.

Two top avalanche info

From Island Park News:

ISLAND PARK, ID— The snowmobiler buried in an avalanche on Two Top Mountain Wednesday sustained serious injuries, according to a Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center report,

This avalanche occurred when the snowmobiler approached a cornice on on a wind loaded, northeast facing slope. The avalanche path was about 100 ft. wide and 150 ft. long. The slope angle was 30 degrees or less except just under the cornice, where it was 43 degrees.

The avalanche slid on a layer of surface hoar about 15 inches deep, and the man was swept downward until he was stopped by some small trees. Riders in his party saw his hand sticking out of the snow and immediately started to shovel him out.

Initially the victim complained of back pain and had facial lacerations, but his condition grew worse because of internal injuries caused by the crushing snow.
.
West Yellowstone Search & Rescue and Island Park S & R volunteers retrieved him from the back country.

snow conditions?

Hey does anyone have any updates on conditions around island Park? We are heading out on March 1st. Been there the last two years, last year was so so but two years ago was epic. We have normally road high lines toward West Yellowstone, and round lions head and two tops. Would like to try Jefferson or some new areas. Any info on where the best snow is woud be greatly appreciated.

we had a day of mixed precip about 2 inches in IP and maybe a little more up higher but the fog! tough to see up there today and it is warm but the snow is good still. we were below reas peak snow was good up high. Hope it is just snow the rest of the week here and not rain.

Well if you know how to do the snow dance please give it a whirl, we would love to show up with a foot or so of new white powder!!! Whar is the avalaunch conditions?

we are trying man not sure if the flat land pow-wow will work. Today we got a little blast of snow here and we are right in the shotgun area. Kind of took a day off but a small group went out. They were along Black Canyon loop and once again just too foggy when they got up in the higher area. We will see what the day brings in the AM and head out and look around. Some colder weather sure would be nice I'm starting to get my summer blood back and it is way too soon for that.

we are having a blast though this is our first time out here and I think we will be back. We have 14 folks in our group that range from all skill levels and we can find stuff for everyone here.

Any updates on the conditions? Been reading snow avalaunch conditions, reporting up to 18" in some places? Can anybody confirm this? We are leaving from Minnesota today will be out there tomorrow morning.

played with some north dakota pieps today, good snow if you know where to find it, Maybe foot to foot and half up high

Spent all day riding around the Last Chance area of Island Park.

Snow quality was poor on average, and the whole area was in bad need of a major fresh snowfall.

Just got back from IP this morning. It snowed all day Thursday and cleared up for a good ride on Friday. There was about 1 to 2 feet off new snow up high and about 6" down low but pretty wind blown. We stay in the shotgun area and usually ride in from one of the 3 parking areas past shot guns. Ridding conditions were pretty good just had to look for the soft snow. We were there from the Feb 20th to Mar 1st. and Thursday was the only day it snowed.

Places to eat and drink in I.P.

There a few places to go for some fun. Pond's Lodge has always been good. There are also some good spots down in Last Chance.
