Is the Shot capacitor really considered a wear item?

My buddies 2024 Summit X went caput at end of the season last year, it's first year. Ski-doo is giving him a hard time covering it under warranty, claiming it is a "wear item"? It's a $700 part to replace! Any of you guys care to share your experience with BRP and this.

Worst part is that his first ride this season, second pull with the recoil and the rope frayed!

I have no experience with the Shot capacitor failing but I will say they are all still going strong, even on my 2018. I think that this for sure would be a warranty item especially this soon.

Not sure how its a wear item since there are no moving parts in a capacitor. They aren’t like batteries. There are capacitors out working on the power grid that are as old as I am. They do fail and sometimes in spectacular fashion but its not from “wear”. Like transformers its heat or over voltage generally. But also not sure if the doo capacitor has other components built into it as a unit.

I have a 2019 that the capacitor failed with a 123 miles on it.A year later the second one failed, just out of warranty they said.I bought one ,big price tag for it .If you can find the article I think was in Doo talk,in 2019 they had a huge fail rate.I have four sleds with shot on them and no failures on the late models I own. They definitely have you on the price for sure.

So does Doo think the service life is a season? Or think your buddy somehow started his sled 3x more than everyone else?

It may be a wear item in their eyes but I would expect the service life to be at least 3 seasons and premature failure should absolutely be covered under warranty.

I totally agree. All I can do is pass this info along to him as myself, like many of you were shocked to hear they weren't honoring it under warranty.
