Is it worth it to ditch the intercooler? 09' TM8 w/ BD kit

Sled is a 2009 M8, 2011 Boondocker PG/RG kit with the 2860R turbo.

I'm debating on whether or not its worth it to buy the regular air box and the new charge tube or just keep what I have.

The IC is nice in the spring, but if you do get a significant increase in low-end throttle response without it, I'd probably just assume bite the bullet and buy the new intake hardware.

Has anyone who ACTUALLY HAD the IC on their sled and ACTUALLY RAN WITH IT AWHILE done this and has any first-hand opinions about it? I'm not really interested in a bunch of regergitated information about other peoples kits or opinions from people who haven't had this particular setup, I'd like to know from people who have done this on this particular sled with this particular kit if its worth it to ditch the IC or not.

You should just buy an xp. It would be perfect for you:face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-win

Bwahaha!!!!

or maybe a nice light Apex?

Friggin posers with their IC turbos... weak!!!:boxing::boxing::boxing:

I've done both... And I think it has less response with the IC. Maybe this will change if you use a 2871 or a 2876 turbo, as they push more air throug the system...

When coming to top end power there is no substitute to the IC..:)

i have been thinking the same thing as you dogmeat, however i decided first i am going to try and make a cold air intake, i think that is the way to go, because i do think the ic is working very well, however if it had fresh air coming into it, it would be that much better...

Havent done it myself, but with the lack of response I figured I would throw this out there, I have ran 12lbs with a 2871-2 and made some pretty hard pulls (over 15 sec) without ever having a problem. No cooler.

depends on how you ride, if you keep air moving through the nose I would leave it but if you ride where your full throttle and barely moving though the trees its not helping and will start to cause more heat. 12 lbs is pushing it with that turbo and will cause a lot of heat, if you ride tight trees I would be putting on the BD mini cooler with a fan at the very least. Personally I would convert to a water to air cooler, but before that I would upgrade to the 2876. With the 2876 it pushes more air and you get cooler charge temps, it also puts out more power at lower boost levels. So with that you may not need the cooler, but if you are making long pulls (over 15 seconds) you may want some kind of cooler running 12lbs to keep from vaporizing the fuel and causing deto.

with that pressure i would keep the cooler. i run that on mine with the mini cooler with fan and i still get high intake temps but i run it hard in the trees like wyoboy said. if you make long pulls back to back it will also get hot. i also run the 2860.

I went from 7.5lbs with no cooler to 12 with the mini and it was not a significant difference in lag that i could tell and i spend most of the day in the trees. being that you already have the cooler i would keep it IMO.

Dogmeat, you should call VOHK and schedule a day to tune with him. He will get the very most out of your sled and even more importantly, tune it for you and the riding you want to do. Once he gets it set, tuning on your end will be very minimal and you can just ride the heck out of it.

What clutching are you running? BD's recomendations or your own? I thought BD's pump gas clutching recomendations were fine, but I've heard their RG ones aren't that great .... I couldn't really compare because the clutch I tried running last year was sticking and I was using a cat green primary spring instead of the titanium one the recomended ... But, it does sound like it probably wouldn't be worth my time to try an ditch the IC .... might as well keep it.

I thought he wouldn't work on any turbo he didn't do the install on?

dont know exactly what my clutching is, vohk set it up for pg and rg.

I may just leave it alone until I get it on the snow and see .... It actually ran pretty well as a pump gas kit last year .... Could be everything just needs some freshening up .... the season did go on awhile longer than normal last year, maybe stuff is just wore out ;)

Can't you buy the parts to switch it back and forth? If so, you can do your own testing right on the hill to see what works for your riding style.

I did that with mine(not a BD) last year, and definitely stayed intercooled. Much more responsive for my riding style.

I can't imagine him not being willing to work on a BD turbo, even if he didn't do the install... it's money for him either way, and gives you a chance to see why NEXT time you should just pay him to do the install.

I run 11-14 consistently, and only have had "issues" (no start is my only issue) on very warm days (june & july). Other than that, wouldn't be worth the loss of response to me. I'm sure I"d get more top end hp with one though, everything is a tradeoff.

There's a reason that CB's last M8 setup was a RG system at 11ish psi but no IC... just sayin.

i know you have read all the stories, etc and heard the preaching. but seriously, bigger turbo and no IC... you will pull the same clutching at way lower boost and then you dont need the IC for the top end anyways. and your bottom end is there just like you dream of.

your shooting yourself in the foot with a small turbo and an intercooler, forcing the need for tradeoffs. IC hurts low end but is necasary for good top..

my two cents is this...I have a 09 cat with the smaller turbo and bd small fan ic. I see no lag in mine, we play alot in the trees and wound not have one if there was a lot of lag and the main diff I see is the same as a procharged ic mustang, It lowers your intake temps so much that you can run more boost on less octane. I only have a pgt but i can get to 12.3# before I run out of injector and I do this with only 91. ( all my ride is 8500 and up) Before the ic I would hit temps of over 280 intake and could not run over 8# without det. Now even in the spring days with temps over 70 I never had an intake temp over 120.

The 2876 will put out the same power with a lot less boost and pushes more air so the charge temps stay down, just because it doesn't feel laggy doesn't mean there isn't power left on the table. ie no lag vs big power off bottom and top.

I'm pleased with the results of the IC on my 09 PGT. I rode a year without it and never noticed a low-end power difference. I can tell you this...ever since installing it I've had to glance back in my snow dust to see if WyoBoy was still coming! So that should help you out in your decision!

i have a business meeting in San Fran next week and im a bit nervous, my question is who sales a rape whistle specially for guys
