Is it mandatory?

depends on year. the 05 2 injector motors you can pull the cylinders with out pulling the motor. but the 06 4 injector engine is a lot harder to do with the motor in. it is easier to pull the motor in the 06 than try to do it in the chassis.

I would just pull motor but to answer your question I believe you can do it with it in. BUT you would still have to pull mount bolts and tip motor forward.

On a 05 you can change pistons without pulling the motor. If you have more than a 1000 miles on the sled though I would pull the motor anyways and check the motor mounts and intake boots.

ok, sounds like the right thing to do is yank the motor. I'm a first timer, and with all that I've read seems to me it's a little learning curve the first time then easy after that. I'd much rather just pull the jugs, already replaced boots for preventative purposes. Sled has 1438 miles on it total.

It isn't that bad to remove a 900, and it's well worth it if you haven't checked your motor mounts in a while. If you don't already have a copy of the 05 deep snow shop manual, find the link to download it in the stickies. Of course there is alot of us here who have had a 900 out and back in more than a few times, were all here to help.
On the other hand, it is mid-season.... if it were me, and my belt mileage was good, I might be tempted to just install the top end quickly and plan for the engine removal as part of my summer projects. Of course this doesn't really apply to me because I have an 06.:face-icon-small-dis How many miles are you getting out of your belts right now?

That would be my opinion as well, get the new top end in with the motor in the sled, and if you start seeing belt issues, pull the motor out this summer for a full inspection when you have more time...

Never had a belt issue runnin' 1115 belt. Motor has to come out now, just took the "Y" off and the mag side piston skirt has a chunck missing.:face-icon-small-sho
can't just guess there is nothing down there, or flip the sled upside down....I need to do this cheap! Not going to have this for very long after this! Any advise? I have $3500 into it...

That sucks man, your definitely going to want to take it right apart, hopefully your bottom end is ok! Dropped skirts can be bad news.
Good luck, hope it turns out ok
