Is 800 a good sled?

I'm looking at buying a 03 800 rmk for 2500 and it has 3000 on the chasis and 500 on total rebuild of topend and crank with big bearing kit, and the guy has the receipts to prove it. i was just wondering if that would solve all the crank issues known to happen with the 800's??? and the track is a 159" and i live in iowa, and i was wondering how hard it would be to turn and how much snow i could ride it in without beatin up the track?? it also has reverse, simmons skis, v force reeds, and some other stuff. any info would help

No that will not solve all the issues with the 800. was the case rebuilt at the same time?If your just riding trails a short trak would probably be better but what you have there will probably work. Make sure you have ice scratchers on the rear skid and snow depth is not much of a issue. the deal on the motor is a crap shoot depending on who rebuilt it and what they did.

alright well the bearring kit will defently work if installed right, make sure you take a comppresion test on both heads, and see if it is at the manafacture spcs, and for your track legnh and width i would say no less the 3 ft to be slamming the throttle on for just riding on a trail to the mountains 2 .5 or so ft would be alright,800s an nice sled :good luck :face-icon-small-hap

What do you mean by installed right? how should it have been installed? and how i'm thinking about riding it in iowa and possibly if i have anyone to ride with out in the mountains

Yes it was a good sled. Lots of people online had troubles with cranks but many more were out there that had no problems. Your buying a used sled so its buyer beware. The big bearing did help tremendously for the crank problems that were had however checking crank runout is really the only "good" way to know if it MAY last or not. As far as handling... Its an old chassis that handles way differently than the newer foreward riding sleds. With that said it will sidehill and turn just fine if the pilot knows how to ride it. Untill the newer rider foreward sleds came out it was ONE of the very best mtn sleds built. You will not want to ride it in hard pack ice but as long as there is snow getting into the track and hyfaxes you should be fine. If you try and ride ANY mtn sled wide open for long periods of time on hard trails or hard open areas you are going to trash the track. The longer paddles just wont handle the abuse. If you ride it for what it was built for it will be a great sled. I am not sold on the price though. For that sled if it were me I would not pay more than 2k for it. As far as sleds go its pretty old.
However my brother is still riding and loving his 02 edge. He keeps modding it and riding it and has no plans to move to the newer sleds. If fits his style and he can pretty much take it wherever he wants to go. Good luck

the clutch is probably the biggest cause of the crank failures. very important to keep the clutch in good condition and balances
