Ad on the inside cover of the new Snowest mag is peddling an answer to the SPOT locator called "InReach" from Garmin that will send and receive text messages.

Not quite my sat phone, but getting close. Not checked pricing yet....

But what gets me :face-icon-small-con is that it is running on Iridium sat's.

Back around 2000 when I got my Globalstar unit, there was another sat company that supposedly went broke, and was bought by the military. Or at least that was the story that I got at the time anyhow.

I was thinking that this was Iridium. I haven't seen much mention of them over the years. Maybe just enough for me to remember the name... A Wiki search doesn't mention anything about this, so I gotta wonder - what kind of service have they been providing during this time period to be able to keep solvent?

Also - if this was not Iridium that I am thinking of, then maybe there was a third sat company vying for the business at that time? If so, can anyone recall the name?

I've had my InReach for a few years and love it. It works perfectly as a satellite communicator and a GPS. I pair it to my smart phone and use the GPS with their mapping app and it works great. I use it to track and to send and receive texts all the time. It is on the Iridium satellite system, which to my understanding uses over 24 satellites which is considerably more than what SPOT uses.

I too have the InReach Explorer and using while hunting and sledding. I really like that I can send & receive text messages while out where cell phones have zero signal strength unless you hike to the peak of some mountain.

FYI, Delorme is the actual manufacturer of the InReach Sat. communicators. Garmin acquired Delorme this year or last.

66 sats

Interesting that y'all already have these.
I don't recall seeing an ad for them before, and I haven't been following much other than the Doo forums occassionally these last many years. Maybe I need to get more active before I miss much more?

???

So - what's the price + monthly?

Either way - my biggest question is about the Sat companies, but ....

I bought the InReach on sale a couple of years ago at Cabelas. I think it was $200-ish. I pay $13/mo and it does everything I need. Well worth it to me because I spend over 200 days a year out in the mtns, about 1/2 of which I'm by myself.

This thread brought this to my attention. I like the features I'm reading about the InReach better than my SPOT. The 2 way communication would be ideal. Looks like the plan will be comparable to my spot as well but I can subscribe for the 4 months of snowmobiling season instead of year round.

I edited my original post to try to get rid of the cornfussion.

My question does not revolve around the DeLorme product as Christopher felt so inclined to edit in on my post.

The question is about Iridium and/or some other sat company that I can't think of - if it exists.

Thank you Christopher for worrying about my ability to produce my own post.
