interview with edmonton avalanchee in valemount

A good lesson, that just because there are tracks on it or you have made numerous climbs on it, that it is safe.

Sorry for the negativity guys but this has gotten ridiculous!
Sad Story but......... you get a feel for what these guys are about right off the bat in the interview when the guy has to add, "We all have turbos, we need that extra power to go places no stock sled will go". Who fricken cares Smart A$$. Your Buddy just got steam rolled by tons of snow and you still think it's smart to put your A$$ out there?
How do you feel now Superman? Shoulda stayed where only stock sleds will go.
I'm sorry but I've completely lost my remorse for these types of guys from this point on. This and the Tumbler Ridge incident clearly show a lack of common sense and good judgment. The boys in Fernie...that was a freak incident. They were not high marking, rather just passing through a bowl at the wrong time. Them and their families I feel for. I don't want to see anyone killed but when you're asking for it why should we feel sorry for you?
No more condolences from me. If guys haven't learned from the first 15 sledders taken by avalanches this year, then these can no longer be seen as an "unfortunate sequence of events". You're somewhere you just should not be.

You cant go by what this reporter wrote down.It was likely taken way out of context, maybe not,the guy might be an idiot.
I think more power is safer myself. Get to the top and not getting stuck half way up has got to be safer.

Wow, for the most part I really have to agree (about the quote). I thought the exact same thing. If that reporter did misquote that guy, then he probably ought to be expecting a visit from him because it sure sounded bad.
That poor guy is gone now, R.I.P. but my condolences now and always will go to the friends and family that had little or nothing to do with the decisions made on that mountain. They must be absolutely devastated. Every one of these incidences make me think of that quote going around here- "If a human is involved in an avalanche, then mistakes were made". Live to ride another day.

We were there the day it happened. riding on the other side of the mtn actually. It happened in Clemina. Heading behind the cabin towards the heli-ski glacier. After you come up the cut blocks, most guys head to the left but there is also a bowl to your right. They were climbing on the upper bench of that bowl.

this is all 2nd and 3rd hand info but its the most accurate I have. A buddy of mine found and dug him out.

-Supposedly when my buddies arrived on the scene the guy had been under for some time. they were digging in the wrong location. some guys i know showed up and found the body quite a large distance from where the existing group thought he was. they figure only about 5 min passed before they had him dug out. The orignal group did not know how to properly use their beacons.

-the article says "some evidence it had slid" Bullsh*t!! The whole bottom of the hill had slid and they were climbing directly above it. Total stupidity.

I have some more info but it is not really important. The main points are they they were climbing in an incredibly risky location and did not know how to use their beacons.

If that's true, then they were probably searching while one guy still had his beacon on send. That would cause the rest of the guys on "search" to follow the guy on "send" in circles. That would throw you off huge. Whatever happened, it's sad to hear another go down. My condolences.

I have to agree. buddy gets killed and his friends still have to mention how powerful their sleds are. seems like alot of ego and not much education in that group.

Sorry to hear about another loss- sounds like his riding buddies weren't there for him at the time he needed them most by not knowing (1) to stay out of where they were and (2) not knowing how to use their beacons. Condolences to the families of this individual and all the others lost this year :(

Thanks for the negative rep Post Ghosts.
It hurts me way more to hear of another senseless death and the loved ones they needlessly leave behind to mourn than a red dot beside my name on an internet forum.
