Interested in a Duramax - What year is best

01 -03 had injector problems. If you do buy one make sure they have been changed out for the newer ones. The warranty is for 200,000 miles or 7 years. So the 01 and 02 are now out of warranty. I drive an 02 and love it to death. We have 8 on our farm and they all have gooseneck balls in the bed so we tow a lot with them. The best one in the fleet is the 06. Stock it has as much power as my pickup with a 80 horse chip. Plus the 6 speed tranny is awsome.

Mid year 06 is when the new engine came out . I got mine in May of 06 and it has been perfect , 82,000 and not any troubles besides front wheel bearings at 70,000 .

I would spend the extra cash and get one with the LBZ or newer . They also changed the ratio on 6th gear when the new engine came out . My truck goes 80 at about 2080 RPM , with the stock tires .

Get one that has the blue Allison Duramax tag on the door , you will not regret it.

I've owned a new one every year since 03. Like these guys say, 06 or 07 Classic w/ the LBZ & Allison 6 sp were the best of that body style. I've had no issues w/ the new body style either, and the interiors are much nicer.

I had a 06 which was a great truck....then got a 08 which so far has been great also. Everyone said watch the fuel economy go down the tank but its no worse than my 06 and is a much nicer truck to drive all in all. I even bought them from some clown on here:D

Has anyone driven them in a snowstorm?

This past winter we drove up the canyon from West Yellowstone and the truck light went off telling us reduced engine power. this was due to snow in the air cleaner. The dealer drilled holes in the top of the air box to correct the problem. The problem is you cant drive it in the summer that way. It sucked to be stranded in a brand new truck.

i would probably prefer the bigger motor and the 6th gear but i dont. i have a late 05 LLY. has 90,000km and the mileage is starting to come around :)

the early years had injectors problems and no high idle. but my gfs dad has a sucess story of a '03. all stock he was getting high 20s mpg empty and little shy of 20 hauling 10,500lb trailor

the 6.4 fords do the same thing, just take off the top of the air cleaner and go, a couple guys in town here have an extra air cleaner top with holes for the winter and a complete for summer

You mean you are actually happy with that thing? Must have been the break in period I put it through! LMAO. The mileage never decreased on my 08 either, same as the 07 Classic.

I drive in snowstorms all the time, kind of hard to avoid in the winter. Never had a problem, but I know of a few that have. The GM bulliten states they should have given you a new filter cover w/ no holes to run in the summer when they drilled holes in the first one.

I bought a mid year split 04 - 04 1/2 First LLY. I too wish I could get an 06 low mile to trade for. They have as much power stock as my truck on the performance setting. Mine has 110,000 on it now and the only thing is you need to keep your fuel filter changed every 10,000 to keep from loosing injectors. Other than that, I love the truck :D

I drive a 1 ton 4x4 work truck that weighs nearly 11000 lbs. It has an allison 6 speed transmission. It has very good power and gets 17 mpg on the highway the company recently bought a ford with a 6.4 turbo it has less power and gets 9.5 mpg and weighs 1000 lb.s less. I have 54000 miles on the chevy and it has been trouble free. Can't say enough good things about the Duramax!

I've had this happen also only when I didn't have the front grill cover on.

The '06 LLY has the exact same engine as the '06 LBZ, other than the ECM.
