I have been refusing to remove the airbox and was not happy with a dry filter pre filter combo.
Decided to take a wash cover, drill it with holes and cover with pre filter then add some foam to help with the seal.
Not the prettiest but it it keeps the intake dry I will be happy!

Hope to test it out soon!

This is EXACTLY what I did on my old WR450 a few years ago and again on my newer 500 EXC. It works great and it makes it very easy to switch out between seasons. I made as many 1" holes as I could without weakening the structure, and then followed that with as many 1/4" holes as I could in the spaces that were left. I had some rubber u channel seal strip that fit perfectly along the edge and gave it a good seal. And I bought an 18"x18" sheet of Outerwears material, cut it to size and hot glued it around the edges.

You will still have to hack up the airbox for powder riding. You will pull that cover off one day and it will be packed full of snow.

I have had the bike out a few times in mixed conditions. I got a bit of snow in the airbox on the deep day but have used prefilter to seal as many openings as possible. So far it's acceptable but certainly something to keep an eye on!

I still run an airbox, but with the whole underside of it cut out and removed. I also run a similar setup to yours with two stock cages stacked on each other, covered with a skin and then a stock filter foam edge....thing works perfect. Underside of the airbox removed helps out a lot but having the sides of the airbox in place helps as well, partially just keeping snow out and partially just the bikes aesthetics looking right with an airbox in the space.

My rule of thumb is cover every conceivable air intake into the air box with pre filter material -- but you will roughly need 50% more air intake surface into the air-box to have enough flow without generating to much vacuum in the airbox.

I just fixed up a Guys Yz, running the same set up as mine but did not have enough intake area. Riding in the same conditions his air box was jam packed full of snow mine was totally clean. it is hard to believe where powder comes in once you generate enough of a vacuum.

When I ran the WR I just removed the airbox completly and ran a filterpod with prefilter. Had to due to The SX kit I had. If you buyld a plastic snowdeflector that acctually works best , just extra work on the change over.
