intake idea/question

Would it help to seal off the area around the gauge and put vents or a gauge cage in to let cold air in from behind the windshield? I stuck my hand up there and I noticed there's what feels like a air inlet up there.

I know everyone is trying to let hot air out from under the hood from this area but it seems like the motor would be sucking in a lot of hot air also?

The vents are not installed yet.

If you take off all of your stock intake stuff from the hood you will notice there isn't a vent up there already...You can put vents on your dash or a gage cage but that will just be to let warm air out...cold air will have to fight to get in. When you ride your sled the first time with vents on the dash put your hand down there and you wont believe how much hot air is coming out of there.

I'm talking about a vent in the duct work right below the gauge not on the hood. It sure feels like there is? I can feel a hole up there with a Frogskin covering on it. If you sealed off the space then no hot air can get in that area and then cold air could be drawn in after I install the vents.

Yep, there is an intake vent right below the left headlight. It sits on the Left hand side intake tract. I would assume AC put that there because IF the side intakes got choked off, at least it would be able to pull SOME air in albeit hot air...which is better than nothing. I have a 2" flowrite I was going to put in mine under there. But now I'm debating on putting it on top of the long intake piece right by the RH headlight (under the slots in the hood right in front of the headlight. Look from the top, you'll see the intake...) Down side to that is that it'll get covered up with snow and basically not do sh!t.....

Not quite what you're talking about but in the same general vein. Bought a used '05 M7 in '06. Previous owner had used a shop vac 90* elbow and plumbed a cold air intake from the hood plenum into the area right behind the windshield on the right hand side. Clamped a small K&N filter over the open end. His solution to the intakes in front of the windshield filling with snow. I can tell you there are times when the hood intakes are snow covered or wet when you can see the engine tryig to suck that K&N filter right into the plenum. Draws some pretty serious air through there at times!

I want to leave this sled stock(2010 HCR) but try to do a few small things to help it out. It just seems to me that the engine is sucking in a ton of hot air in that vent weather you have the dash vented or not. But if you seal it off under the hood it would draw mostly cool air from behind the shield and if you add a few more intake holes you might gain a few HP?

My answer is yes.

I added additional inlets to the underhood intake plenum and sealed the compartment below the headlights just as you are considering. Fresh air can enter this area around the headlights and/or you can add the vents in your pic. I also sealed the inlets on the side of the hood so they too must draw fresh air and not underhood air. Then, I vented my hood to get the hot air out.

This has been discussed so a search should turn up more info. Catsledman1 has posted some good suggestions for this mod.

I think a good way to let the hot air out from under the hood would be to remove that foam under the gauge and vent it there.

Agreed, I removed that foam and cut five holes with a holesaw and covered with screen. I also opened up the panels in front of my knees to facilitate airflow through the engine compartment.

Good Sleddin!

Maybe? If you partition off the headlight area for your intake, the more important question is can enough air enter around the headllights to supply that inlet? I think so. In that case, you do not need the additional vents behind the windshield. Just adjust the headlights to maximize the opening around their edges.

On my 06, there is/was foam around the headlights, kind of looked like a weather strip. It's not there anymore, just another thing to look for to help the air enter that area.

the first cheap mod

griff got it right.

1. first thing take out your upper plenum and look it over, stock you're sucking hot air right off the pipe.

2. best option to mitigate this is to seal up the head light pod area with GOOD QUALITY aluminum tape...............now your engine won't suck hot air.

3. even better , open holes into this area........drill holes around speedo pod and let in more cold air..........you'll find this a huge advantage if you ride in true 3' plus fresh powder dumps.........a stock air intake M series sled will not go through this stuff , yours does?, your weren't in the kind of powder I'm talking about.

4. beware after doing these mods, some day you'll will find yourself out ahead of the crowd with no company.....ok maybe a well set up skidoo. MOst guys just go home, too tough. Your m sled will happily zing through this, but not stock.

I still have the Frogskin intake vent I got with my M1000 update kit because I'm running a Black Boxx on that sled. If I added this to the plenum under the headlights do you think it will add to much extra air and lean my motor out?

2cool air vents has a intake vent kit for the dash that looks pretty good. I saw their stuff at the snow show and it was nice. 2coolairvents.com

I sealed off the under headlight area, put in two flowrights beside the speedo, and opened the intake duct to pull from them. Been there for years...works good.

If you want lots of fresh air you might try our speedo brackets. The thread is called "08 M1000 speedo brackets". (I'm not sure how to attach a link to the thread) They are a real inexpensive and a real easy way to get a 4" hole behind the speedo. Seal under the light and add a snow screen and presto, lots of cool air. When the stock ducting is removed you get lots of hot air exhausted but with the stock ducts in and a sealed head light area you get a big semi covered intake hole. Plus you can see your gage when you are standing.
