Insuring and getting regstration for an imported car?

In the next year or two I'm looking at picking up an older (early 90s) Nissan Skyline GT-R from Japan as a project/go fast car. I wanted to know if anyone had any problem with insuring and registering such a car (imported, RHD etc).

And for those of you who are gonna jump in and say "don't buy some jap crap, buy american", guess what? I'm from Canada I couldn't really give two sh!ts if its from japan or from the states. I want something different and with potential, plus boost is just plain fun:p:D.

Anybody have any experience with importing a vehicle from overseas?

Thanks!

It sucks! alot of people will tell you you can get a conversion done and inspections report blah blah. Bottom line, If you goto give your insurance company the VIN# and it pulls up as what;s known as a "Grey Market" vehicle. Most companies will not touch them and they'll cancel the policy within their Underwriting Time frame (most states 60 days of the effective date of the policy). This is why you do not give them a VIN# and pray it works out because they may be able to deny a claim in accordance to the verbage of their policy. Any vehicle built outside of North America can face this as they were originally built and designed with the emissions standards and safty standards, pereformance limitations or lack there of their contry of origin. Many companies will not tough them. Check with yours to see if they insure a "Grey Market Vehicle". And just remember If you can find only one company that will insure it your stuck with them and their rates. Always make sure you find a couple if possible so you have options. good luck.

I'm in the states, but I talked to a guy last summer (from Canada) that bought one. he bought it from a guy in the Vancouver,BC area. So, I guess what I'm saying is, you might look for one that it already imported into Canada.

Mine is a States car. but we have a company in town that has brought MANY in of all brands RHD, so let me know If you want me to get their number for ya and you can talk to them about it!

Having been a fan of the car for many years and love the drifting scene, your best advice is look into skyline club in Vancouver BC they do importing and conversions. From talking to the guys the laws are a lot easier to deal with up there than down here in the states. If I run across their site I'll post it for ya. Good luck.

The skylines are badass! I really want like the 2000-2004 GT-R. Murder that biotch out and put some engine mods for MAJOR power and speed.
