Insurance question

Hypothetical scenario...
Let's say I am towing a snowmobile trailer, have accident and wreck uninsured snowmobiles in trailer.
How does that play out?

Unless your insurance company will cover trailer contents, the sleds will not be covered unless some one else is responsible for the accident

My agent looked into it and this was the answer (for my policy)
Towed items covered as long as I am not being compensated for towing.

I would urge everybody do their own homework on their policy, sled and truck. Avoid any misunderstandings.

Who is your insurance policy with?

Allstate says absolutely no coverage for me in those cases. Snowmobiles, ATV's, SxS's, etc all must be on their own policies.

Over the years I reviewed this and Farm Bureau said I have liability coverage for items being towed by my truck but policy doesnt cover damages to snowmobile, mc, atv, watercraft, etc.

Same here I believe. Trailer itself is covered as an extension of the vehicle insurance. But snowmobiles need to have their own insurance. In this day and age, it's suicide to not have at least liability insurance on your toys. Too many people are read to sue.

State Farm is similar to above.

I had my sled on another guys trailer. Black ice and we lost both sleds off the open trailer. Mine was totaled and not insured with full coverage so I ate the loss.

I also have insurance coverage on my enclosed trailer since it is big enough to have a plate.

my trailer is NOT covered under the truck policy. ive never heard of a company that did offer that coverage.

the metlife grand protect package is cool. you need to have coverage on your truck, trailer, and sled - but in the event of an accident you only pay one deductible for all insured items.

i used to have the cheapest insurance i could find until my aunt who is a bankruptcy attorney told me some horror stories of people who have been insured and lost everything due to being under insured.

The story I have always heard was that if it is an "insurable vehicle" such as a sled, it must have it's own policy. Trailer Liability is covered by the tow vehicle, but trailer replacement is it's own policy as well. I have my trailer insured with full coverage because it's stupid cheap at $10/mo if it gets stolen, damaged, or wrecked. Contents of the trailer though are on their own.

Nope, I asked if I could have insurance on my trailer. State Farm told me that it is covered with my towing vehicle insurance (but all the damage is part of the truck limits). I asked what happens if someone steals my trailer from my house and was told it was covered by their policy for home owners. You are making me nervous though, I might have to ask again to be sure. I have really good insurance with State Farm (truck, wife's car, third vehicle, snowmobile, trailer, camper, guns, jewelry, house, etc.).

My dad and I have always had separate insurance policies for our trailers from the trucks. On the trailer policies we have a content value written on there so if something happens and everything is a loss the trailer and whatever is in it (up to a certain value) is covered.

I have State Farm. There is a policy on the truck, trailer, and each individual sled. It's a good question regarding someone else's sleds in my trailer.

The sleds in the trailer whether owned or non owned would not be covered under your auto policy for physical damage. Im assuming your talking about a at fault accident? A not at fault accident the other parties policy would pick up the coverage under the property damage section of his policy.

I have state farm and have a separate policy for my enclosed trailer.

I also use State Farm, the truck insurance covers the liability portion of the trailer. You can purchase additional insurance to bring the trailer to a full coverage, however State Farm will not cover the cargo. The cargo will either fall under its own policy or your home owners.

it varies by insurer.
Generally, if your insurer offers separate coverage for the category of item that is damaged, such as a sled, you aren't covered under the base vehicle coverage.
But, if you are transporting a trailer full of household goods, as in the case of moving, and you wreck and wipe out the contents of the trailer, you probably are covered for the value of the contents.

I had a claim after someone broke into my camper, stole stereo and stole around $600 personal items.

Farm Bureau said items which are attached to the camper or used for towing the camper (ie, load equalizing hitch, it was not taken but they could have, probably too heavy to mess with) are covered under camper insurance.

Personal items lost would be covered under my homeowners policy. Never claimed persnal items as my homeowners deduct was higher than the value.

This was 10 years ago.

do not take your agents comments on your policy as gospel, call your provider ask to speak with a policy rep, and or underwriting. depending on insurance companies, you have to have a paid premium policy on each large item you are trying to make a claim on. small trailers (under 1000.00) "could" be considered covered under the towing auto policy... higher dollar trailers, NEED THEIR OWN POLICY, to have a payment made for repair, or replacement over 1000.00. just because it is hooked to an insured tow vehicle, DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING ELSE BUT, THE TOW VEHICLE IS COVERED.

contents of any auto, or trailer, ARE NOT COVERED under any policy, unless you have SPECIFIC RIDERS, for that item on a policy.

sleds, tools, gear, are not covered under a trailer/truck/auto policy.

most policies state if the item needs to be titled, or registered, it NEEDS TO BE COVERED UNDER IT'S OWN POLICY.

think of it this way... if the insurance company does not have a policy, and or collect a premium for coverage on the item, it is NOT COVERED.

the biggest mistake I see made regularly is, an insured has a fire/theft insured toy (comprehensive only policy), in/on a trailer, the auto gets in an accident, this is not a comp loss, it is a collision, no coverage on the toy, as it has no coverage provided.

your results may vary, don't assume you have coverage, KNOW YOU HAVE COVERAGE!

I'm an agent and have access to lots of companies policies. The trailer is usually covered for liability while being towed by your pick up but physical damage to the trailer is not. Some home owners policies will cover small trailers( usually 1500 value or less depending on company) for physical damage. This is all dependent on the company. I do not know of a company that covers the sleds as an extension of the truck and trailer for physical damage. If you have a sled on a trailer and want it covered in the event of a wreck then I'd suggest you cover it with full coverage. If your agent tells you it is covered without you carrying full coverage while being towed, have them put it in writing on their letter head and notarized. In that case, if you had an accident, either the insurance company or your agents E and O coverage will be responsible for paying the damages as it would be your agents fault for informing you incorrectly.
