Inspect your fuel lines

Inspect your fuel lines from the tank to the shut off switch and from the switch to the pump.

While riding last weekend my sled(03 vertical escape) just stopped. I opend the hood to have a look around and noticed fuel running ender the carbs. Shut the fuel off and pulled the air box out. The line running from the switch to the pump had broke in two and was brittle to the touch.

Being 20 miles from the truck I needed a trail fix. I cut the line from the tank to the switch to run straight to the pump, Its a different size. After slowly streching out the brittle line I was ablle to get it to just fit over the barb on the pump.

Not wanting it to come off on the ride back to the truck, I babied the sled. As we all know the 800 is known for running lean in the mid range. About 8 miles from the truck at 30 MPH the engine locks up. Pulled the plugs and they were white.

So $5 worth of fuel line has now cost me a rebuild.

I just bought the sled last Oct. with a fresh rebuild. The sled had been meticulously taken care of and it looks like the fuel lines were overlooked by more then me.

Hope this helps someone

Either way seems like you are too lean. This should not happen if you are jetted corectly. You should not lock up the motor. What clip are you runnning on your needles? I always try to blip the throttle going down the trail and never hold it steady. I still think you are too lean and need to raise your clips. Also have you jetted up for the ethanol in the fuel. All gas stations are now required 10% ethanol in the gas. The Ethanol leans out the sled. SLP sugests 2 size bigger main jet and raise one "E" clip.

I am running 2 jet sizes richer and my needle is 1/2 clip (shim) richer. Had I been riding the sled like I normally do this would not have happened. the only reason this happened is the ethonol fuel has dried out the fuel lines so much they got brittle and broke. I was taking it too easy on the sled by not grabbing a fist full and ran it in the mid range too long.

I don't think it's the ethanol as I run race or av gas in mine and all my lines were toast last season even the one in the tank was bad so if you didn't change that one do so .
