I have a group of us heading out west in a few weeks and we are leaning towards going to the Snowies but none of us have been there before (or anywehre in Wyoming besides the top of the world). We have been going to Cooke for 5-6 years but we just want to try something closer and different. Where would you recommend we should head to (for riding, lodging, nightlife, etc.)? Anything to watch out for at a certain place? Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

Stay at Albany Lodge, gas, food, sled rentals (cats), not too far to the good riding, ect...

Make sure everyone has survival gear, backpacks, shovels, avy gear, ect...
Be prepared to stay a night in the bush.

GPS is really good to have and plug in my saftey kit coordinates before you go.

Avoid at all cost the 7 fools area (French Creek) that is west of Libby Flats and just south of Lake Marie. It's steep and deep in there and many people don't make it back out too easily. Lots of other great places to ride anyhow.

Plenty of us that ride the area so PM us and hopefully someone can show you around a bit.

PS>...buy a snowbunje, some sliktape kevlar towstraps, and start climbing stairs now....the air is real thin up there.

They lower it after it freezes leaving a big air space under the ice which creates weak ice. It's cold I hear when you fall through on your sled. Locals please correct me if I am wrong.

It is one of the water sources for the city of Cheyenne - so yes the water can/does drop below the ice in the winter creating the conditions newmy1 described.

Stay off of it - there are signs around the lake with the warning, but they need to put a sign on Q-T trail intersection IMO. That is where I sometimes see tracks on the ice.
