Info on riding areas near Stevens Pass and Mt. Baker (visiting Dec 12-18th)

Hi all,

My friend and I will be visiting the Stevens Pass and Mt. Baker areas Dec 12-18th. I've never ridden in these areas and was looking for some advice on places to go. We have two Skidoo Summit sleds that are pretty capable, but my buddy is still a bit new to powder so I don't want to get him in over his head.

Does anyone have advice on good areas to go that won't be too stressful for someone still getting used to riding powder? Also, we'll be bringing snowboards with us and hopefully will do some shuttle runs for snowboarding. If anyone knows a good spot to do that we'd be very grateful as well.

If you'd like to join us for some riding please let me know as well. We'd be happy to share some beer with ya.

Mt Baker area, look up Schriebers Meadows and Glacier creek for sled access riding around and on Baker.. both areas have some sick sled shredding if you can get your sled to the drop zones.. Schreibers is pretty easy.. it leads up Baker and mostly above tree line.. only good for sunny days tho, don't wanna get caught in a storm up there.. you'll get lost or sucked into a black hole..

there is not a lot around stevens pass..

The closest thing to Stevens pass is Fish lake. It is only about 25 to 30 min from the pass. Check out the fish lake thread for a pic of snowcone...plenty of snow there for riding.

Great, thanks for the info guys! Does Fish Lake have some open areas to play in the powder? Looks like the cone could be fun in the photo. Anyone else have suggestions for spots in the central WA area? We're willing to drive an hour or two if needed. Thanks again.

Snowcone yes if you are experienced...plenty of snow there.

Several places had some open powder but it was very easy to get stuck.

Morrow Meadow was very large and open (on trail 7B) but only had about a foot of snow as of 12/9/2012. It looks fun for just racing around if it gets another foot or two this week.

Welcome to WA!! I moved here a couple of years ago and have been riding my whole life (ID/OR/UT/MT/WY/WA) Having said that, I quickly came to terms with Mt Baker being the most dangerous place I have ever been on a sled. for multiple reasons... Sooo I can't urge you enough to HAVE A LOCAL GUIDE!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! mark my words, baker will own you if you try to cowboy that MT without extensive knowledge.

The Fish Lake area has a great trail system and some good open areas. The Sugarloaf/Miners ridge area has quite a bit of open area and the trails are all well groomed and mapped. Snocone is OK but kind of small. The Trinity trail has a few small open meadows but no real hills.
