infant helmets.

I have a one year old daughter and I am wondering if there are any infant helmets on the market for her. I like to take her for little atv and snowmobile rides around the house and I would feel a lot better if she had a little protection for her head.

we got a little polaris full face. the smallest we could find. it fit a 2 year old but i don't know about a 1 yr old

i can honestly say that i turned out as awsome as i am now because i was so cool back then. i think this was where i first learned the art of the countersteer

I tend to agree with Minie Me!

There are small bicycle helmets for infants that are used with 'Chariot' type strollers but they are not designed for motor-vehicle use. And using a helmet that is for a child older and too big is of little protection to the child you are trying to protect.

Wait for the child to be of a age that has a helmet designed for their head. Is the risk really worth the potential injury? There's plenty of time for our kids to take part in our sports once they have proper safety gear.

And please don't take them for a ride without the gear, especially on an atv. I have seen the result of a quick little ride that uncle wanted to give his nephew. No gear for the infant and he almost died of a head injury. Being a medic coming to that scene is hard enough. I can't imagine the feelings of the parent or uncle who felt the risk was worth it.

i gonna try and put a helmet on a carton of eggs and toss it up against the wall, ill let you know what happens:confused:

I gotta say some of you people are real ingnorant. I plan on taking my daughter around the house going no more than a couple of miles an hour, way less speed than these cyclists with the chariot strollers are doing. I have no intentions of taking her for any real rides and any amount of speed for years to come but I would like her to get used to the feel and the noise of my toys so when she is old enough for a real ride she is comfortable and used to the machine. The funny thing is the people that are bashing me in this thread are probably the same people that watch and buy the mountain mod mania films and watch that little youngster ride a near 400 hp sled which is real safe. I'm a responsible parent just wanting my child to get the feel for the sport in a safe way.

if i was bashing i would have said your a retard or douche bag or something like that... however i didnt!
i just dont get why you feel unsafe if your only putting around the yard?

Uhh ohh! Busted! I've been putting around the yard with my kids on my sled since they could barely walk. I'm a baahhhaadddd mommy! Although, I must say, I feel safer in my yard with my toddler in my lap on a sled than I do out on the highway with us all strapped in a vehicle. Sometimes I think it's a death wish with as many accidents as I've seen the last two years between Valley County and Boise.

Great photo GoneSleddin'! I've got one like that somewhere - my open face helmet was yellow with black racing strips down the center. I still have it somewhere.

my boys have been ridin since they were a year and half old good bicycle helmet works good

my only concern would be if a helmets weight was too much for your childs neck to support at that age. I think they are alot like our helmets, you spend some coin for the lighter lids out there. for as slow as your going, I would look into a bicycle type helmet or snowboard style helmet that you can still attach goggles to and keep her eyes protected. let us know what you find. possibly google youth helmets, see what comes up.

I took my 18 month old on several 50 mile + rides last winter and he cant get enough of the ATV's in the summer. I bought him a polaris full face helmet for winter riding and a FLY youth MX helmet for the summer. Buy a youth neckroll and your golden.

Buy a small helmet and throw on a thick balaclava and you are set. I love taking the kids riding. Dont let the douche bags flip you ****. How many of these idiots smoke next to their kids and see that as ok but you wanting to protect your little one's melon is an issue to them.

Have had our 5 y/o in a XS ski helmet for the last 3 seasons. Gonna pass that down to our 2 y/o and find him a nice little MX or full face helmet.
Probably MX w/ a breath deflector, he's used to the open face helmet with a baclava and goggles.
Don't want him gettin' into no NMFH!

I agree with PowderGirl...same here...

Mine have been riding around the house on the sleds and ATV since they were young enough to be able to point at it.

BUT, we had a tiny kids bicycle helmet that FIT them and that's safer than a sled helmet that's not small enough, IMO. for tooling around the yard at less than 15 mph, you're really just teaching them that they need to wear a helmet, more than anything. YOU CAN'T wreck a sled at 15MPH in a 5 acre field. LOL

I have also been looking around, and the problem like alot of others have stated, is the weight of a full face helmet. I was told up until 2-3 a hockey helmet is your best bet.

I agree that for the type of riding your daughter is going to be doing a small bicycle helmet or even no helmet at all is the best bet. The risk for neck injury from a heavy helmet is greater than that of head trauma when your doing 5mph and the only risk is hitting a bump.

I'm all for safety but some people are just getting carried away. They feel they need to censor there kids from anything that could possibly cause emotional or physical discomfort. Heck some schools here arn't even allowed to gives kids a failing grade because it will hurt there self esteem. This doesen't apply to a 1yr old but the same thing is going on to much older kids and its ruining the life skills they used to be learning.

I think what jasonrev is doing is awesome as long as he is 100% responsible.

That's my point Scott. And I do agree that it is a great idea to attire them in gear as early as you can, if anything, to teach them safety from the get go.

Also, what speed/impact is a bicycle helmet rated for? Surely more than 10 - 15 miles per hour. Probably 40 mph at least?

Also, if my little one needs a helmet for riding a snowmobile around the yard at 10 miles per hour - she probably needs one for around the inside of the house too with everything she bashes into! In fact, full on body armour may be more appropriate. Especially with how fast those little legs get too book'n down the hallway! Jeesh! I cant catch her anymore and she's barely 2!

Good idea on the hocky helmet - will have to check into that. Although, the Elmo helmet is a hit and dont know that mine will wear anything but that helmet!

I'm in the same boat... My daughter is a year and a half old and I take her for rides on the quad or minibike but have not been able to find a helmet of any kind that will fit her.
The only quad/bike I take her on are automatics, and I travel at a very low rate of speed.
I took her for her 1st ride at the age of 6months in a harness. I realize that a helmet or harness will do little to no good if the weight of my body hits her from a wreck or sudden stop, so I am very careful and I am the only 1 that gives her a ride.
I agree that it (Should) be fairly safe in the yard at low speeds, but don't be blind to the fact that a critical injury could happen in the yard at low speeds.
I have been around bikes long enough to know that experience goes a long way.
I have seen people panic or get hurt in the parking lot numerous times.
Its not that I don't trust my wife, but she has very little experience and has been hurt before going 5mph due to the simple fact that she didn't know how to fall.
Because of this I am not comfortable letting her take our daughter for a ride.
