Improving a 03 summit (zx)

My buddy has a summit and this winter in 2ft of fresh he said "I felt like I was driving UNDER the snow,It would never climb on top" . So, #1- what skis work well on these in powder, I'v ridden it and I don't think they work to well. #2- his is a 151 what pitch track are ski doos and would a 159 be a big improvment. Would a 16" track work on it? He dosn't have a ton of money to throw at it but skis/track are doable. Thanks, darre

I have an 01 zx summit with the 151 and I am wondering the same question as well. Im thinking I am going to go with the 16" track, hopefully that will help in the deep. I would also like to hear some reccommendations for skis on this sled.
Thanks.

I have a ZX with SLP Powerpros on it. They are sweet. I would suggest trying skis before you mess with the track. You may like the outcome.

The stock ski doo tracks are junk from those years, but they get the job done. I'm running a 151 on mine and if I was keeping the sled any longer, I would upgrade.

A 16 wide will fit w/ a little room to spare; you may have to use washers as spacers to get it in though -it's that tight.

Best bet would be to stick with the 151 for ease, though going 159 would be easy as well as long as you had everything apart. Any on the newer Camoplast designs or stock Polaris designs would be a huge improvement over the stock doo.

BTW 2.52 pitch

Simmons work extremely well with that sled. no darting, good control and lift. you could also play with the track suspension also to alter the transfer..
all doos, up to the year 2007 with a 159 and shorter, were 252 pitch.

Wow, im surprised at what im hearing

I have an 02 HMX 800 and i love the thing more than my other sled. Ive never felt like i was plowing snow or driving under it. Simmons or Powder Pros seem to what all the ZX guys are running.. personnaly i have no prob with the stock skis but, if i could change one thing, it would be the track for a full 2" lug weight instead of mixed heights. IMO. like what RideCo said, i would change the skis and see what happens... OR just upgrade :D

See if you can find a set of the Simmons Gen II's and maybe tighten the front limiter strap to improve the float of the sled (more planing on the snow and not so much trenching through it). Like Marcuso said, more weight transfer might help too, get the front out of the snow. If he doesn't have a skid plate it might help a little if he gets one.

Good luck

I'm running pilot 6.9's from a REV and love them! On the 03, try messing around with limiter strap settings and rear shock settings. The 01, when you put the track under her, do a skid set-back, improves attack angle, some the 02's and all 03's had it stock.

I put a set of Simmons on mine and a 159x16x2 and I out climbed 2 Apexes with 162x16x2.25 tracks and my engine is completely stock on an 01. loosen the limiter straps a bit maybe. I really like the old ZX chassis.

thanks

Thanks for the help guys. I think he may try the 159, who makes the best rail ext. for these or does someone want to sell a pair? We'll try fooling with the shock, I looked at his limiter strap and he seems to have it loosened the whole way. My personal complaint on the ski's are that when you turn at slower speed the front just dives into the snow compaired to my cat, maybe its just the zx chassis.Love the doo 800, hits hard like the old 670,unfortunetly he broke a piston skirt at years end, also a doo 800 trait ,it would seem.

I would set back the skid instead of getting rail extensions. Its not very hard to do and it will help the approach angle. I have a M-10 144 skid set back for my 153 camo extreme works really well just a burp on the throttle and its on top. IMO.

ive heard the simmons SUCK! when it comes to sidehilling and gettin in a bite into the hill

Simmons work really well on the ZX....find a 159 by 16 and do a set back like everyone says.....if you can find a cheap light weight hood...the stock hood assembly can weigh close to 30lbs....alot of weight on the front.

Dont worry about the skis, that should be the least of your worries. I have been running my stock skis for 7 yrs. If you are riding alot of trails then maybe go ahead and upgrade. Get rid of the heavy 30 lb hood, go with a 16 inch track but dont go 159. 16" x 151 or 144 is perfect for this sled. If you want specifics pm me. Dynoport Pipe into a Thing can.

Check his shocks, mine did this too and I have found that my center rear shock was shot so I am replacing it and getting the fronts rebuilt.

Got the same sled expect it got a 159" I know what you mean buy plowing thorough the snow. My sled like to stay flat even with the limiters fully loosen but it doesn't trench like the other shorter tracks. I though with a 151 the front end would be up more but I guess not. A Longer track will trench less but won't help much to bring up the front end. I am kind of in the same boat, hate to say it but sounds like we needs a rev.
