IMPORTANT REMINDER...AXYS-MOUNTAIN SLEDS WITH CHAINCASES (ALL 3"-LUG FROM FACTORY)
Since many of us have had a 2013-15 QuickDrive™ equipped PRO-RMK sled... that doesn't have an adjustment for belt tension.... I'd thought that I'd put this up here.
For 2016... ALL factory 3"-lug equipped mountain sleds... in both 163" and 155", the AXYS-SKS and the Assault all have chaincase drive systems.
The drive-chain tension needs to be adjusted periodically... ESPECIALLY FOR THE FIRST FEW RIDES.
The Borg Warner HYVO chains... which are extremely durable/tough/strong... need to be adjusted as they take a slight stretch from use.
If the chain is allowed to become slack... this can cause the chain to get jammed up in the case...and cause problems... or break from going slack-to-tight in a "snap"...
This "out of adjustment" condition is where most (of the very few) chain failures originate... the other small amount can come from defective parts, incorrect chain pitch for a gearing combo, running out of oil, worn out parts, alignment problems from an accident, etc. Very rarely have I seen or heard of a chain breaking that did not fit into one of these descriptions... and most often, it was simply never being adjusted.
Heck, I've heard people on the hill bragging "I've never touched my adjustment on the last 20 sled's I've owned, and never had a problem"... like it was some kind of badge of courage.... ADJUST THEM from time to time.
Also... with much use, the adjuster shoe gets a worn and will need to be compensated for... especially if the chain is too tight. That is what most of that brown powder is in the oil when you change the oil... a phenolic plastic that the shoe is made of. With a lot of use... that shoe should be replaced.
With the 3" tracks... the load on the drivetrain will be higher... probably a good reason that they went with the chain in the first place on these tracks.
With that increased load... they will be less tolerant of poor maintenance of the chain tension... so check that tension often!!
I like to change the oil after the first 5 rides ... after the chain and gears have broken in to each other... and get those metal particles out of the case... Heck... If have some time... I like to pull the muffler and pop the sled on its side to open up the case... look around and clean things up well. (but not necessary)
As a note.. for all those nit-picky members... the 3"-lug tracks from the factory are all 162" or 156"
