Ice Roads

With a bit of luck my friend H2SNOW will be reporting to us live from the Ice Roads.

That show cracked me up! It's amazing justwhat they do to make it appear alot harder than it is. Same for that Crabbing show!
It's tough don't get me wrong, been there don e that and will again too. But they producers edit it to the max to make it appear alot worse than it is IMO.
Most of that is on flat lakes with very slow speeds. The land crossings are the worse hills with a few spin outs.. Whooppeeee!

Call me stupid, but what exactly are "ice roads" and what purpose do they serve? I live in Colorado, we don't have any LARGE bodies of water here! Just a few small lakes.

I don't want to seem like a smart a**, but aren't all lakes flat?? Isn't that was gravity does?

lamo I guess you've never been on a hilly lake. Those are a b!tch to drive on. :beer;:D

No doubt you're from MinneNosnowta.. And that burg of Shakopee even.. I suppose you ride a pol too.. ( Tell IndyDan I said so)

No Ice isn't flat! Up here it's rougher than all get out with pressure ridges. Even lakes get them. I suppose the Canuks have the same problems on their ice.

Alot of remote areas are accessed by iceroads as well. Many villages along the Yukon river are connected during the winter when it freezes over. They plow it and everything. Its alot easier than snowmachining. They also plow Big Lake when the ice is thick enough. Its just a shortcut to cross the lake to get home.

As a teenager I helped my dad build many an ice road. though smaller, the challenge is still there. we would plow on land but on the many creeks and the river we had to cross it took alot of work. to build the ice bridge we plowed snow out onto the ice, then pump water into it to freeze it solid. many times when we had a high snow year the ice bridge would be 4-5 feet thick above the river ice. i found a couple of pictures also.

Ya do what ya gotta do to get by.
Up on the north slope of Ak alot of the drilling rigs are out at remote sites drilling test holes for our future sledding gas, with ice roads for access to them. The greenies won't let anyone build roads for year around access. So it's winters only. I've been up there at -75 with a 30 mph wind building/driving on them.

I would like to see it, Saw a road accross a big river in Canada, don't know how far it went though.
