As a former New Yorker, I can appreciate your desire. While the snow may not be perfect, it is not bad from an "East Coast" perspective. Just spring conditions.
I rode last weekend at Cottonwood Pass, which is 10 miles west of Buena Vista. Other than one other group of 5 guys I saw late in the day, I think I was the only person up there. There wasn't much in the way of powder, but there were still many feet of snow that was decent, especially a bit later in the day once it had time to loosen up.
It would be about a 2 hour drive from Denver. Getting there is easy....drive due west out of Buena Vista on CR 306 towards Cottonwood Pass. When you run into snow, unload and ride! (They don't plow it in the winter, so you just go until the road ends in the snow).
The riding area is easy to navigate, and you can still ride all the way over to Taylor Reservoir (about 25 miles from parking area). The trail had a couple of bare spots, and was a bit bumpy in places, but plenty of options. Riding alone is always a bit risky, especially if you don't know the sled and how it has been maintained. I would love to go with you, but can't this weekend.
Last weekend both Vail Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass both got a good bit of fresh snow. I rode the Snowy Range (near Centennial, WY) a few weeks ago, and they had just been dumped on with several feet of fresh powder.....conditions might still be very good there, but I can't recommend planning a ride alone there, if you get off the main trail. There are some steep (as in off the face of the mountain) drops, if you don't know what to look for or where you are. If you can get up there early in the day, you might be able to hook up with another group. This is about 120 miles northwest of Denver.
Good luck and have fun!
