I need some Water Well help

So I recently purchased and acreage, great little place, nice house, oversized garage. But the well only flow .5 gallons/minute. It was agreed in the contract that the sellers would pay for half the price of a new well. So I have a guy come and try to drill a well today. He drilled 10 ft over from the old well and went down 250ft and no water. This costs me $15/foot for him to do this so I'm not to keen on him randomly poking holes in my yard trying to find water. Could add up quite quickly. So I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to get more flow out of the current well. Could it be sanded off? Would cleaning the well help? Anyone know anything about a cistern system? If anyone knows anything about well maintainance it would help out alot. Thanks

i've done well work for 15 years. how old is it" is it a 4" well. what do the nieghbors have. i have seen well witchers work but not a practice i use but may be worth a try. you might be looking at a granite well (rock hole). the prob with that it sounds like it was sand or clay to 250' you should be able to find water some where on the prop if it is 250' to the rock ledge. we don't charge people for all the dry holes we drill and it's only 10/ft here

i live out where there isnt a lot of water also and work with a couple pump guys digging resiovr tanks for them...you have a couple options...you could hydrofracture the well that has .5 gal/min (doesnt always work but i have seen large improvements on wells also)...you could put in a 3000 gallon (or whatever size you like, thats just most common around where i live) concrete tank (might be a lot cheaper then drilling more holes on your property but dont plan on having a really huge yard)...or you could have someone come out and witch it for you (some people have the "gift" and some don't, i don't lol)

hope this helps...if you have any other questions i would be happy to try and help

Hydrofrack it. google it

I had mine done and it went from 1/2 gal minute to 7 gal per min. They pressurize the well with super high pressure and then pound a very heavy ram onto well to explode the pressure, its pretty cool. They actually blow or open the water veins up that feed the well underground. cost me 1500 bux and my well was 625 ft deep.Best money i spent. My well used to go dry in the summer. Nothing sucks more than to be taking a shower and get all soaped up and run out of water.

The original well is approx. 30 years old. It is a 4' casing and 110 ft deep. Alot of other wells in the area are anywhere from 140-260 ft deep and range in flow rates from 3-12 gallons/minute. The neighbors well, which is about 100 ft away is 140 ft deep and flows 3 gallons/minute. Any recommendations BluDu? Should I get him to go to 300ft? 350ft?

it sounds like a conventinal 4" well with a screen. as far as the old one it's seen it's life. it's not un common to drill 3-5 wells on a prop to find water in a problem area. if the land is hilly or rolling alway drill in the gully or low part. well witcher may be worth calling most drillers will know of some that can witch. if the nieghbors well is only 100' and you can get near it with the prop line that would be a wise choice.

That sounds like a very good idea. I'm going to have to look into this. I wish I would have posted here before telling this guy to drill a new well.

I used to work for a well drillin company out of idaho, imo i would have him center up on the existing hole and punch it out another 100' or so and see wat you get. If you want some more detailed info, pm me ant i can get you in contact with my old employer, and get some advice. These guys know wat they're doin. Dont feel bad about the 250' dry hole, ive drilled a 1180' dry 8" hole....bad deal.

I asked him about deepining the current well and he looked at it and said that he couldn't do it. Most of the well drilling companies around here won't deepen existing well unless they are the ones who drilled it.

i geuss you need to find out if they are rock holes or a screend well. usally rock well is 6" min. from the info you gave i would say it is a screend well. here in mn we have mostly all sand and can drill 3 wells a day if in the same nieghborhood. it is usally 3-5 day job to drill rock hole depending on rig. if he was there just one day he wasn't drilling rock. if the old one was a screend well you can't go deeper with that well

It took him about 8 hours to drill 250 ft. What are the chances of there being water deeper than 250ft? Should I just start looking at a cistern system and say screw the new well?

did he say why he quit. we usally drill to the granite and move

I don't think he put any casing in. I'm not sure what the cuttings look like but when I was there it looked like alot of sand and clay, not much rock.

no he isn't drilling rock then he is drilling clay and looking for sand. i would say let him drill deeper. we usally drill to the granite which is usally 250' here and can find water sitting right on the granite.
