I Need Help On A 2003 Summit 800x

It Just Started A Few Rides Ago, My Sled Just Starts Running Real Rough, Its Like I Have No Mid Power, And It Bougs When I Punch It. I Thought It Was The Belt So I Checked It. It Looked Fine, I Messed A Little Bit With The Teather , That Seamed To Help A Little, Then Id Let It Sit For A Bit It Would Run Better, But Then It Would Do It Again, The Sleds In Great Shape It Has 1600 Miles On It. Im At A Loss, Any Segestions To Help Would Be Great Thanks

What's the compression? I know that the 800's had rings that would flake. Just a suggestion, maybe not enough compression at RPM to run.

I Thaught That There Might Be Something Wrong With The Motor But When I First Start It, It Runs Great, After I Go And Turn In The Powder And The Snow Gets On The Machine From Boondocking, It Starts To Give Me Trouble, Do You Think That There Might Be Something With The Computer? Thanks Gravityxxx

If You Get Lots Of Snow On The Hood, It Has Trouble With The Air Mixture. I Have The Same Problem On Mine. People Have Told Me To Play With The Air/fuel Mixer Screw, The One Thats Really Hard To Get At, But I Havent Touched It Yet. I Just Keep Her To The Pin And It Clears Itself Out. Would Maybe Ask Your Dealer About The Screw, You Pretty Much Have To Take Off The Carbs To Get At It.
Best Of Luck, Steve

maybe your carbs are freezing up? has happened to me before. let it sit and idle and they thaw out a little bit and as soon as you take off they freeze back up.

01 Summit 800X

I had this same problem. I thought that new spark plugs had fixed it. They did for that day. The next day, same thing. Changed to new plugs. Didn't work. Drained feul in bowls. Found some water on slides. Cleaned very well. Fixed again. Next day added iso alcohol. Same thing. Drained bowls. Ran fine for5 kms or so then would not idle. Checked compression with finger on plug hole. No comp on clutch side. Took to shop for mech to take apart. Found "detonation" deiseling if you will. Broke chunks of both pistons off to the point of lost compr. New jugs new pistons and rings $1500 cdn. Take from that what you will.

I don't think its any of the above problems, although they are good things to check out, I've seen the exact same problem you have..
here is a simple little test.. obviously when you start riding it is all good.. then after a few mins it goes to krap right!? well just open the gas cap a little and see if your tank is getting pressurized (will make hiss sounds out of it), my buddies '03 summit had a blocked vent tube to the gas tank and had the 100% same symptoms. try blowing through the vent tube and see if its blocked.

This issue could be the cause of the bad pistons on the other post too as it would lean it out considerably. I even know of an '03 Rev that imploded the gas tank!

Another thing to check is if your intake filters are plugged up. I like the powder filters for these as the stock filters are way too course for all the snow/ice that gits in there, and this will draw water down into the airbox of course - causing freezing possibly. I have had filter covers on mine since new and never had freezing issues.

Mine has the same issue, '06 800 1500 miles it has been doing it all season. We put stable in it last fall. Hubby has taken the exhaust valves off and cleaned, checked the carb's, clutches and all the connections. Mine starts out good, then will cut out at mid to high range, I pin it and it blows out, runs fine until I start boondocking or going at the slower speeds. Acting like it loads up, sounds like garbage, the plugs are dark with build up on them, we change them it acts ok, then right back to it a few minutes later. I get maybe 6000-7500 rpm when it is acting up, sounds like running on one cyl., or just plain loaded up. I thought it had water in the fuel put heet in the tank, ran good but next tank back to it. Last tank put more heet in it and still bogged, next day put 91 fuel in from different station and it ran good. I am not sure what to expect next time around.....last year had the electrical problem with moisture, we fixed that. I also had the y-pipe bolts back out and a broken plug wire on my last ride last year. That is also all fixed.....URGH!!!!! Compression is within a couple of # of each other.

Mine is driving me nuts too. A little different though. Rough idle, good mid range and spitting rich at top end. Plugs are getting fouled but running in mid range seems to clear them temporarily. I changed plug wires, cleaned carbs and checked needle and seats, checked exhaust vales and reeds. This is a recently new block with the last one going for over 7000 kms so I don't expect a compression problem. I just now adjusted the pilot air screws from the 1.5 turns that is recommended to 0.5 turns out. This is were it idles the fastest and smoothest and starts first pull. It seems as if the DPM is not working and gone full rich. All hoses are on and there are not lines off. Plugs are dark with 430 main jets. I will try 420's but that may be a band-aid as it has run well for the first 4.5 years. Anything you find I might try too. By the way you can get at both air screws with the air box off. One other little bit of info I found out. In 2004 they went to a different needle in the main jet which allowed them to drop the main to 400. This 430 jet in the 2003HO might be due to a different airbox or to overcome a lean mid range conditioin.

Hey I had similar thing happen on my 03 and it was that black manifold looking thing that clips to air box with the dpm hoses hooked to it those bellows inside were not moving correctly and would load up in the mid real bad. Luckily a friend had same sled so we switched parts and it cleared up. Well that is what was wrong with mine if you have someone with the same sled maybe borrow a few parts to trouble shoot. Good luck.
