i was looking at the Ortovox S1-any one have this one or know of a better one.

Thnks

id go with the bca tracker also...great unit

or wait till mid november and pick up the new bca tracker 2

If you have avalanche training in your area take the class, if you already have just show up for the first field day. Usually the instructors will put the folks through several tests using their own beacons. In on test our instructor places a beacon in transmit on the ground with the class having theirs on locate starting 10' away. We all kept taking one step back away from the transmit beacon until each student lost signal. It was amazing the differences. I think you could easily google some avalanche instructors who would give you their impression of current beacons and features.

My .02 is go with the Mammut Pulse by Barryvox. It is a 3 antenna unit that has many slick features if you want to take the time to learn them. That said, I came from a house full of Trackers that I was very happy with in both function and ease of use. I just feel that the Pulse is that much better now that we have grown in our knowledge and experience a bit. If you are the type of guy to pick up your beacon a couple times a year and not much practice in between, I would go tracker or one of the others mentioned. If you plan to learn more and become more advanced in avalanche rescue, I would ask around a bit with the pro's who teach it / sell it. Good on ya for doing the home work. Have a safe season. EW

Snowbigdeal is one of our local Snowest friendly providers of all kinds of good rescue/survival gear. What ever you do DON"T buy from REI. They are bleeding money in mass amounts to close your favorite riding areas.

i was in the same boat as you at the begginning of last season. i ended up getting an ortovox s1. The foreset service puts on a avy class in our area every year. During our field tests (multiple different scenarios including a beacon park) the s1 i was using along with a couple other people in the class that had them continually found the subject (buried beacon) faster and more accurately. there were lots of bca trackers (which did quite well) a couple sos, and others; all of which work, but i felt the s1 was faster in our particular scenarios. which ever one you buy, practice with it and know how to use it. a high tech beacon does you no good if you are not familiar with how to use it. this is one of the reasons people like the tracker so much is its ease of use....it will be interesting to see the tracker II.

There are a lot of choices out there, and it is a tough decision on which one to get. Below are just some of my opinions throughout lots of searching, usage.

BCA Tracker DTS - Stupid simple to use. This is the one I recommend to people that don't get much time in training of beacon use. It has one button to push to get it into recieve mode. From there it works relatively good. If I am riding with friends that you are slightly unsure of what their reaction will be (plus experience) this is the one I tell them to get just for its ease of use.

BCA Tracker 2 - Not out yet (this is getting to be a little bit of a broken record). I have had discussions with them, and it sounds like November this year will finally be the time it comes out for public use. I did get to see two actual working demos of this beacon. BCA stayed true to their roots on this one and made it easy to use. Instead of pushing a button on the face of the unit, they put a little slider you pull down on. My initial testing with this one was unreal. It is a very fast unit. Switching from send to recieve it was picking up the sending beacon within less than a second, and putting you almost on top of it quickly. When this one finally comes out, it will prob be the beacon of recommendation for me.

Pieps Freeride - If you are on a budget, it is better than nothing. I hope I don't personally have to rely on a group with these units trying to find me. I was amazed at how slow this unit is to update and refresh. Also you have to push the button three times to get it into recieve mode. Overall in a panick situation (which most avy's are) this one would not be a good choice.

Pieps DSP - I like this unit alot (currently). Has alot of features, and is a very fast beacon to use. This one will take alot of time to learn, but once you know it I feel it is a great unit to have.

Mammut Pulse - Same as the Pieps DSP, a very nice beacon. Once again though, this unit has alot of features, and it takes alot of time to learn it.

Above are the beacons I have used a played with. Overall, almost all the choices are great, but you have to learn your beacon and how to use it. Take a avy class if you have not yet, as this will be the best tool you can have, knowledge.

Good luck on your choice.

I don't know about taking a long time to figure out the mammut pulse... i have one, pretty much dummy proof when it comes to trying to find other beacons... put it on search and an arrrow points in which direction to walk... tells you how far away you are and when you get ontop of hte other beacon it tells you how deep down it is... IMO this is one of the easiest beacons to use. I did a test with my buddies when we were havin lunch one day, put my beacon in a garbage bag and hid it... i think all 4 of them it took 5 minutes to find the beacon and they were within 40 feet of it... put one of theres in the bag and hid it... took me bout 35 seconds to find it. Now sure there are people out htere that are better with certain beacons than others... thats why i think this beacon is one of the best. If you can't figure out how to use this beacon... you don't belong in the backcountry.

I vote mammut pulse!

Some info on the Mammut Pulse from another thread..

Seems they don't support snowmobiling..

One feature that I am going to look for on the new BCA2 is if it will switch automatically to SEND if it does not sense any movement from you when you were initially in SEARCH mode.
An example would be, while searching for a victim, you become an victim because of a second slide, and the unit switches over to SEND.

I think that the Pulse may have that, not sure about DSP or Tracker2.

That is one thing I'd like to see, just in the remote case of a second slide while searching.
