I must be blind...

I looked in manual for drive chain dipstick - but I have no clue where they're saying its at, and worse...I'm not seeing it under the hood anywhere. Maybe I need stronger reading glasses - where should I look for it on a '99 MM 700?

We did a 45 mile poker ride Sunday and I was hearing a low hum that I haven't heard before - my first thot was I need to check the oil level in that drive box.

Sled did run better with airbox back on vs. K&N filters. Only bogged down a little when going thru a bumpy section for a couple miles. Otherwise it ran a whole lot better then previous weekend's poker ride. Pretty country up there and some open fields full of powder to play in.

Next I'll remount the coils and CDI box back to the airbox. Currently, coils are bolted on to back side of head and CDI box is ziptied onto antifreeze line.
 
I can get a pic of mine when I get home tonight.
The dip stick is on the front side of the chain case. A long 12 gauge or so wire with a round loop that clips to the chain case so it will not come out. The loop is just infront of the brake caliper.

Check the chain tension as well. I like to tension mine by going as tight as I can with my fingers then lock it with the lock nut. I can check my manual when I get home.

And even visual inspection of the drive shaft bearings. One is in bottom to the chain case the other is behind your secondary clutch.

Thanks, I'll check again next time I pull the cover off. Not sure I looked that closely in front of brake caliper. What oil do you put in if it's low on the dipstick? I wondered about chain tightening as well - saw a note on it in the manual - once again, the illustrations aren't that clear - wish they'd take actual pictures like for my wife's MXZ - lot easier to follow those.

Here you go. This sled is under construction so there is no pipe and the chain case and cover are just sitting there. But you get the point.

i thought chain tension is finger tight then back off 1/8 turn? i would run the air box but take out the middle peice in the air box and you might need to rejet!
 
Thanks for pics - and no, I never even thought to look in front of brake. Is that the chain adjustment bolt right below there? And should I need to add oil - what do you guys use - a straight 75 or 80W?

Edit: I probably didn't see the dipstick because bender pipes are in the way?

Yes the bolt with the locking nut directly bellow the dip stick is the tensioner.
I use 75W but I have seen others use Auto Trani fluid or 10w30.

I would do the airbox mod. Copied this from Totally Yamaha
But sence you had Pods you may try it as is first before you rejet.

#1- Remove top half of air box and snap-on snow filter


#2- Drill six or seven 1" holes in the recessed area, right in front of the
stock air inlet on air box. Try to keep them in a nice row, evenly spaced.
Remember, if the little snap on snow-filter doesn't cover the holes, you are
drilling where you shouldn't be.


#3- remove the baffle plate that is sandwiched between the top and bottom
halves of the air box. Drill the same holes in the baffle plate as you did in
the top of the air box. Drill them right in front of the air ports in the
baffle plate.


#4- Chamfer the holes you drilled, removing any loose plastic or debris.


#5- Re-assemble the air box, with the baffle plate installed.


#6- go up one jet size across the board if you are jetted properly.


#7- typically we have seen two to three horsepower gain on the dyno, and
probably more in the mountains at higher altitudes.


#8- you could possibly have to put a fatter pilot jet in if it starts to
lean-bog off idle when the throttle is snapped open. This is due to the
increase in airflow.
