Hypertech Max Energy E-Con Programmer

I wouldn't put much faith in aftermarket product manifacturer's claims to increase fuel economy. MAYBE the results they got under ideal testing conditions and whatnot yielded a certain result at a certain set of conditions, etc..... but I think you're pretty much letting yourself be buffaloed if you think buying an air filter, chip, whatever, is going to appreciably increase your fuel economy.

With that said, I have exactly the same programmer you're talking about for my 2005 2500HD 8.1L/Allison and it did absolutley nothing whatsoever for fuel economy ... the "performance" tune did wake the motor up a little bit, but at 10 mpg average I don't feel like paying for 91 octane fuel every fillup, so all I am using the programmer for as of now is to program for the 285/75/16 tires and set the speed limiter at 124 mph.

I didn't think it would gain alot, if any. Besides I guess I can buy alot.....wait.....SOME gas for the price of the programmer...

Thanks Dogmeat

You have to look at it this way:

Auto manufacturers are taxed by the CAFE standard, so the better fuel economy their fleets get as a whole the more money they make. This is why you've seen the 1/2 ton trucks get tuned less and less like a "truck" ... on the diesel trucks, just because of the way diesel motors work, some of these tuners might gain you something, providing you were using them on a virtually stock truck. The second you go adding big tires and all that crap your fuel miledge goes down the drain. With that said, there's not a whole lot of room on the gas motors to get any remaining fuel economy out of them and not have them run lean as hell and be all messed up ... they're pretty well tuned for fuel economy from the factory.

Of course the aftermarket companies are gonna sell you whatever they can, but I personally have _NEVER_ seen one of these programmer/chip things or any other "mod" that was supposed to gain you fuel economy ever work that way, and I keep very meticulous records of every vehicle I've ever owned.
